Although "To Build a Home" by The Cinematic Orchestra, featuring Canadian singer-songwriter Patrick Watson, had little success on music charts, it has been used in several different TV shows, including Criminal Minds, Orange is the New Black, One Tree Hill, EastEnders, Grey's Anatomy, and This Is Us and has been streamed over 60 million times.
The National took home the Best "Alternative" (whatever that means) Music Album Grammy last night, beating out Arcade Fire, Gorillaz, LCD Soundsystem, and Father John Misty. Sleep Well Beast is the band’s first Grammy. Bass player Scott Devendorf was at the awards show to pick up the award. Congrats to the National from KEXP!
"All I Want Is You" was released in the UK as a single on 12 June 1989. The B-side featured covers of The Righteous Brothers', "Unchained Melody", and a cover of Love Affair's "Everlasting Love". It reached number 4 in the UK charts and number 2 in Australia, number 12 on the Dutch Top 40, and not surprisingly, number 1 in Ireland. Oh, and by the way, the amazing string arrangement on this song was done by Van Dyke Parks.
It's difficult to beat this recorded version of "The Alley," but the one the band recorded here at KEXP has to be a contender. www.youtube.com
NOTE: If you find yourself in the band's home state of Colorado in February, check them out in Vail and Fort Collins.
Lonely Soul features the classic vocal stylings (is that a word?) of The Verve's Richard Ashcroft who can be seen at festivals in Argentina and Mexico this April. For more info: richardashcroft.com
Hey John, what is about the music from the new Daniel Day Lewis film "Phantom Thread," which Rolling Stone calls a "lushly orchestral, romantic score" that is so great? Well first, thank you for asking such an interesting question. As it turns out, it was scored by Radiohead's Johnny Greenwood and is up for an Oscar and I am (cough) optimistic that he will win. #DadJokes
Lord Huron will release their third LP Vide Noir (translation "empty black) on April 20th (via Whispering Pines/Republic Records) The new album was inspired by driving Los Angeles after dark, singer Ben Schneider explained in a statement:
“My nighttime drives ranged all over the city—across the twinkling grid of the valley, into the creeping shadows of the foothills, through downtown’s neon canyons and way out to the darksome ocean. I started imagining Vide Noir as an epic odyssey through the city, across dimensions, and out into the cosmos. A journey along the spectrum of human experience. A search for meaning amidst the cold indifference of The Universe.”
Lord Huron is in Paris at this exact moment, but will kick off a US tour that finds them at the Moore Theatre on June 7th. Hey, let's go! www.lordhuron.com
Wilson will play a string of shows in the US in March (none in Seattle which is unacceptable) before heading over to Europe. The video for this new song from the Laurel Canyon's singer is weird, and cool, and weird. www.youtube.com
Formerly known as Throwing Shade, Nabihah Iqbal released her debut full-length album “Weighing of the Heart” via Ninja Tune in December.
Born in London in the late ‘80s, she attended music school from a young age, learning the piano, flute and guitar. Her listening habits started with Michael Jackson and Oasis. In her early teens, she got into punk and metal. At around 16, her tastes broadened out, encountering the likes of Radiohead, Sigur Ros, Explosions In The Sky alongside older bands too, like The Cure, Joy Division and Siouxsie and the Banshees.
She has a few European dates this spring, but no US ones, yet, which is unacceptable. Let her know you want to see her live info@nabihahiqbal.com
Did you know that New Order (in conjunction with Moorhouse’s Brewery of Burnley) has a beer? It says right here on NewOrder.com that "(t)he premium 4.2% beer, named 'Stray Dog' (after a track on the band’s most recent album Music Complete), is a refreshing and clean tasting golden ale with hints of citrus fruit and lychee, all balanced by a subtle bitterness.
As it turn out, KEXP has a beer, too. Transistor IPA is "a crisp and session-friendly brew, with floral and woody hop notes and a beautiful golden hue." So in your face New Order beer!
BTW, KEXP DJ Troy Nelson will be debuting the KEXP beer song (and special vinyl) at Clash Cover Night here at KEXP on February 7th. For more info, blog.kexp.org
THE CURE will be celebrating 40 imaginary years on Saturday 7th July 2018 with a 120 minute headline show at BST Hyde Park, London. A panoply of fabulous artists will join the band on the day, including Interpol, Goldfrapp, Editors, Ride, Slowdive. It's sold out, which stinks.
Jorge Elbrecht (born in San Jose, Costa Rica 1978) is a music producer and visual artist. He lives and works between Costa Rica, New York and Los Angeles...which sounds amazing.
Portlandia and Washed Out (pronounced "Warshed Out" here in parts of Warshingston.

Not only does David's son Duncan have a book club inspired by the late singer, but (t)wo friends have had one for a very very long time, as well. It was mostly an excuse to drink and gossip. In January of 2016, they found renewed purpose in their sadness over the death of David Bowie. They decided to stop mucking around and actually get some reading done - from the list of books that he loved. And you can join us as we read a new book every month and then spend twenty or so minutes blathering about it...

Liz Phair was a fan of the music of recently deceased Mark E. Smith and tweeted out a link to one of her favorite songs by his band, The Fall. It's a great one. @PhizLair Jan 24 "The Fall - Telephone Thing youtu.be"

A hookworm is "a parasitic nematode worm that inhabits the intestines of humans and other animals. It has hooklike mouthparts with which it attaches itself to the wall of the gut, puncturing the blood vessels and feeding on the blood." Ew. The band's new album is a departure. They write on Bandcamp "Forget everything you know about Hookworms. Ok, maybe not everything; the urgency and viscera both live and on record that led the five-piece to prominence across two blistering full-length LPs—2013’s Pearl Mystic and 2014 follow-up The Hum—remains. However, as they return with their much-anticipated third record Microshift, the title of the record connotates more than just the intended nod to the audio plug-in their vocalist MJ regularly uses; it could also be an understatement of a three-year narrative that’s brought about changing circumstances, influences and subsequent evolution."
Charlatans singer Tim Burgess does not age. We think he's a shape-shifter. Judge for yourself. www.accessaa.co.uk
Holy crap, their show at Showbox on Feb 20th is still not sold out. Better act fast. www.blackrebelmotorcycleclub.com
David writes in" "In honor of your explosive diarrhea, can you play Devo's Uncontrollable Urge? Also it's my one year olds favorite song."
Lea Porcelain is one of our new favorites, yet they have no upcoming shows anywhere. This is, of course, unacceptable and thus they are suspended from listening to the show until tomorrow. I hope they'll take the time to truly think about what they've done. We're not mad, just disappointed.
Philadelphia rapper and producer Lushlife has teamed up with the Austin, Texas producer Botany to form a new project called the Skull Eclipses. They’ll release their self-titled debut album later this year, which will, at least according to a press release, be influenced by the electronic music of the late ’90s and early ’00s. The Skull Eclipses have also shared this new song “Pillars,” which features Shabazz Palaces’ Baba Maraire and Ava Luna’s Felicia Douglass.
The story behind this song (and group!) is insane. TheFader.com tells it well: Though hailing from different parts of the world, the six of them met while living in New Zealand and moved to London to work on music together. It’s a tight squeeze, but the setup allows for an interesting creative process, with song ideas drifting through the two-story house like incense smoke. Their first official song, “Something For Your M.I.N.D.,” came together like that, with members making notes and adding layers as it moved from room to room.
Then Emily sent the GarageBand file to an internet friend Orono, who, though born in Japan, was going to boarding school in Maine at the time. Orono listened to it, wrote some lyrics, and then, in fragmented takes while her roommate was in the bathroom, recorded a vocal. www.thefader.com
The Go! Team are a six-piece band from Brighton, England. They combine indie rock and garage rock with a mixture of blaxploitation and Bollywood soundtracks, double Dutch chants, old school hip hop and distorted guitars. Those in Cascadia can see them Friday March 30th at Neumos in Seattle. For the full list of tour dates. thegoteam.co.uk
If you have interest, Girl In A Band by Kim Gordon is a great read. For an excerpt, go here to read her telling of the last Sonic Youth show and the end of her marriage to Thurston Moore. "Thurston and I weren’t speaking to each other. We had exchanged maybe 15 words all week. After 27 years of marriage, things had fallen apart. The couple everyone believed was golden and normal and eternally intact, who gave younger musicians hope they could outlast a crazy rock’n’roll world, was now just another cliche of relationship failure – a male midlife crisis, another woman, a double life." www.theguardian.com
Screaming Trees released "Uncle Anesthesia" on this day in 1991. Singer Mark Lanegan's latest effort "Gargoyle" came in at # 60 on KEXP's top albums of 2017. We LOVED Beehive on The Morning Show. Check out the full list here blog.kexp.org
When reached for comment about a possible Oasis reunion, Liam Gallagher said "#$%^&!" then insulted numerous people, animals and inanimate objects. Okay, we made this up. And by we, I mean me, morning show producer Owen Murphy. John Richards had nothing to do with this nonsense.
Released on this day in 2006, Arctic Monkeys went to No.1 on the UK album chart with their debut 'Whatever People Say I Am That's What I'm Not', becoming the fastest-selling debut in chart history after selling more than 360,000 copies in its first week of release. The album's title was taken from a line from the novel Saturday Night and Sunday Morning written by Alan Sillitoe. ✅
The band makes lovely music but has LITERALLY no information anywhere that updates what they did past 2016. They're suspended from the show for the rest of the minute.
Slowdive return to the U.S. April 26-29 for Levitation Festival, in Texas, Then in Dallas at the Granada Theater April 27th and then in July they help The Cure through their mid-life crisis 40th anniversary sold-out show in London.
