A few years ago, the stand-up comic Tig Notaro was diagnosed with breast cancer. And in an instantly legendary stand-up set at Largo in L.A., she processed that diagnosis, as well as the death of her mother, an infection that almost killed her, and a bad breakup in front of an audience that couldn’t believe what it was seeing. The Netflix documentary Tig follows the story of what’s been going on in Notaro’s life after that famous set. And Sharon Van Etten, a fan of Notaro, wrote this lovely song specifically for the documentary’s end credits.

From his website: "After an unforeseen and unanticipated delay, Peter is nearing the top of the visa application list at the US Consulate. Due to a brief diplomatic spat last year between the US and Turkey resulting in a temporary mutual ban on visa issuances to each country, a backlog of Turkish applicants has seen Peter’s own caught up in the pile. Released on this date in 1989, Technique was the first New Order album to reach number one in the UK charts. Fine Time, was the first single, and it reached number 11. From Stereogum: "Here Lies, a synthpop soundscape featuring his frequent collaborator Tamaryn, creeps with a kind of hopeful gloom. We talked to Elbrecht about his stylistic hodgepodge and the complicated role of a producer back in 2015, and these two components seem especially pronounced on his new material, which is said to be derived from a “10-year period of deterioration” where the artist would “[meander] from one foggy idea to the next, unable to focus.” "

This song was written in the Vanilla rehearsals in April 1979, in the sessions which the band wished to record directly from their rehearsal space. Their record company, CBS, would have none of it and demanded they use an actual studio. They chose Wessex studios: it best replicated the intimacy of the Vanilla space.

Karen O wrote this song for a new, artfully produced promotional video from the French fashion company Kenzo. The short film follows a fashion photographer, played by Dirty Beaches frontman Alex Zhang Hungtai, as he falls for model Kiko Mizuhara. Like the song itself, it's told in several different sections or chapters, as the music continues to shift in unlikely directions. (The song first appears about two minutes into the video: bit.ly ).

The Jam were touring the States when this became their first UK #1. In an interview with Positive Energy of Madness, Jam drummer Rick Buckler said: "It was a shock when we got to #1, otherwise we wouldn't have been in the States. We knew 'Going Underground' would do well. We had a good drink that night. However, everyone wanted to be back in Britain. We made out we had all come down with a virus. We canceled the rest of the tour of the States. We flew back to Britain on Concorde, to record 'Going Underground' on Top of The Pops for the following week."

Clash drummer Topper Headon wrote the music and the original lyrics. In an interview, singer Joe Strummer claimed that "the real genius of 'Rock The Casbah' is Topper. He banged down the drum track. Then ran over to the piano and then the bass." The sad irony about the song is that Headon wrote it musically, but had been fired from the group because of drug problems by the time the song became an enormous hit in the US. Indeed, in the music video for the song, its original Clash drummer Terry Chimes at the kit. internationalclashday.com

Texas-born singer-songwriter Johnny Nash released Stir It Up as a follow-up to his signature tune I Can See Clearly Now. Both singles were infused with the reggae sound he brought back from a 1967 trip to Jamaica, where he met up-and-comer Bob Marley. Not only was Marley an assistant producer on Nash's album, but he also contributed a handful of tunes, including this one. Nash's version would become Marley's first hit outside of Jamaica, but he originally recorded it with his own group, The Wailers. After Nash's success, The Wailers recorded it again for their 1973 album, Catch a Fire.

Frontman Michael Stipe looked back at the recording of the Green album in a 2008 interview with Rolling Stone magazine. He recalled: "For me, the big moment is 'World Leader Pretend.' It's a tribute to Leonard Cohen, using military terms to describe a battle within. I was so proud of the lyrics and my vocal take that I refused to sing it a second time. I did it once. That was it."

The song uses a recurring Australian problem (drought) to pose the question "What for?", meaning "why did Europeans bother to colonize this harsh place". The song mentions two prominent indigenous Australians (Truganini and Albert Namatjira) whose lives were altered by European settlement and discusses current day sentiment towards the old country, namely the monarchy.
