This song is notable in The Clash's canon in that it is the only song of theirs to be played from first show to last. The band played so many shows and had a policy of rotating their setlist night by night, so it's hard to say that it was played at every single show, but it certainly featured in 99% of their shows and tours to all accounts. It was played in their first shows in 1976, and in their farewell shows in 1985.

“In the early ’70s David Bowie came out with Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars and they were like a proper band,” says Clash guitarist Mick Jones in John Robb’s Punk Rock: An Oral History. “It wasn’t like the David Bowie we all knew about, the ‘Space Oddity’ David Bowie. Punk rock is considered a product of the ’70s, when bands like the Ramones, the Sex Pistols and the Clash propelled the style into the mainstream. But punk really has its roots in the early ’60s, when three chord bashers with attitude (like MC5) first established their own loud, fast and hard rules for setting rebellion to music. www.gibson.com

"Police on My Back" was a rare example of the Clash tackling a reggae tune and, rather than trying to fuse its Caribbean rhythms with the band's muscular approach, they stripped the tune to its bones and tackled it as straight rock & roll. "Police on My Back" was written by Eddy Grant when he was leader of the Equals.

Pennie Smith was snapping photos of the Clash at New York's Palladium in September of 1979 when she captured one of the most iconic images in rock history which became the cover of 'London Calling'. The smashed bass now resides at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio. internationalclashday.com

The third and final single from their third studio album, "Train In Vain" was not originally listed on the album's track listing, appearing as a hidden track at the end of the album. This was because the track was added to the record at the last minute, when the sleeve was already in production. It was the first Clash song to reach the United States Top 30 charts and in 2004, the song was ranked number 298 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

Originally the song was called "I'm So Bored With You", written by Mick Jones before he joined The Clash. In his first meeting with Joe Strummer, Jones played several of his songs, and when he played "I'm So Bored With You," Strummer apparently misheard the lyrics as "I'm So Bored with the USA." Thinking that this would form a great song about the social ills of America, Strummer started coming up with new lyrics before Jones could explain that actually it was about his then-current on-off relationship.

This song was originally recorded by the Jamaican group Danny Ray and the Revolutioneers in 1976. Danny Ray sampled the Jackie Edwards song "Get Up" on the track, so Edwards and Ray are the credited songwriters of "Revolution Rock." When The Clash recorded the song, lead singer Joe Strummer changed some of the original lyrics, inserting a reference to Bobby Darin's "Mack The Knife"

The Clash used to have Grandmaster Flash open for their shows in NYC. "The Message" took rap music from the house parties of its origin, to the social platforms later developed by groups like Public Enemy, N.W.A, and Rage Against the Machine. Melle Mel said in an interview with NPR: "Our group, like Flash and the Furious Five, we didn't actually want to do "The Message" because we was used to doing party raps and boasting how good we are and all that."

While you may be more familiar with The Clash's version, the song was originally written by Junior Murvin. The song became an anthem in the UK in 1976 as the Notting Hill Carnival erupted into a riot. Joe Strummer and Paul Simonon of the Clash were involved in the rioting, which inspired them to cover the song on their debut album, in a style that they called "'punk reggae', not 'white reggae'"

"Rock the Casbah" was musically written by the band's drummer Topper Headon and was based on a piano part that he had been toying with and the band members then filled out the song together. Joe Strummer didn't like Headon's lyrics calling them "a soppy set of lyrics about how much he missed his girlfriend". He took one look at these words and said, 'How incredibly interesting!', screwed the piece of paper into a ball and chucked it backwards over his head.
