When asked what’s the best song he’s ever written, Moby replied, “God Moving Over the Face of the Waters.” He explained, “Ironically enough it’s a song that doesn’t have any lyrics to it. It’s an instrumental piece of music that, when I was writing it, I had this vision, like at least according to the Old Testament, the creation story, at one point you know, what is it – the earth was without form and void and God was moving over the face of the waters. And this particular piece of music was written with that in mind.”:dontforgetthesongs365.wordpress.com

Beck suffered a spinal injury in 2008, which left him in a great deal of pain. For several years he was unable to pick up his guitar. However, this song finds him in a happy place. He explained: "I had a spine injury and there was a long period where it wasn't easy to make music. Recovering from that makes it a lot easier. It's made a huge difference."The song contains some nonsensical rhymes: "Standing on the lawn doin' jiu jitsu.. Girl in a bikini with the Lamborghini shih tzu..." Beck told Q magazine: "That rap was all mostly free-form. Later, I did try and write something that was more finessed, but it didn't have the same energy. So I left Wow as it was."

In December 1984, Time Zone released their most well-known single, "World Destruction," a collaboration between Afrika Bambaataa, ex-Sex Pistol/Public Image Ltd. leader John Lydon, and producer/bassist Bill Laswell. Afrika Bambaataa: "I was talking to Bill Laswell saying I need somebody who's really crazy, man, and he thought of John Lydon. I knew he was perfect because I'd seen this movie that he'd made (Copkiller), I knew about all the Sex Pistols and Public Image stuff, so we got together and we did a smashing crazy version, and a version where he cussed the Queen something terrible, which was never released."

David Bowie said about this song: "The face of America that we have to put up with is the MacDonald’s/Disney/Coke face, this really homogenous, bland cultural invasion that sweeps over us – which is unfortunate, because the aspects of America that are really magical to us are the things it seems to reject like black music, or the Beat poets: there’s an incredibly strong individuality about America that gets glossed over by the corporate invasion."

The song is the opening track of "Love & Hate." Co-producer Danger Mouse told Mojo: "The moment we finished 'Cold Little Heart,' there was no way it wasn't going to open the album. Everybody knows about Michael's voice, but he's also an amazing guitar player and songwriter. I said, 'The first song you release off this album should be an instrumental.' We didn't do that, This is the next best thing; opening it with a song, where he doesn't sing in the first five minutes, but it's still all Michael, his melodies and his beautiful guitar playing."

A reviewer heard them at a festival in Dublin last September. WTF is this!?! KEXP? I guess you're listening to KEXP. Nirvana borrowed heavily from this song to create "Come As You Are." Killing Joke considered legal action, but after Kurt Cobain died, they dispensed with any thoughts of a lawsuit. Dave Grohl and Jaz Coleman later became good friends, and Grohl played drums on the 2003 self-titled Killing Joke album.

During weeks-long recording sessions, Lea Porcelain would often listen to Bruce Springsteen's cut, 'Streets Of Philadelphia'. “We remembered that for some reason we would always blast this song through our stereo at home and it was kind of a homecoming song during our recording period. One day before we drove down to the family for Christmas, we spent a night covering this song and in various versions, this is the version that we came up with that sounds fully like us and we would give this song to everyone of our family and friends to listen to and to thank them for their support, their understanding and their love.”

The album,"Scratch My Back," recorded at Air Lyndhurst and Real World Studios during 2009, consists of cover versions of twelve songs by various artists, using only orchestra and voice. The idea behind the "Scratch My Back" project is a song exchange where each artist would cover one of Peter Gabriel's songs in return for his covering one of theirs; the other artists' renditions of Gabriel's songs were to appear on an album entitled "I'll Scratch Yours."

Director Jonathan Demme used this to open his movie "Philadelphia," starring Tom Hanks as a lawyer dying of AIDS. Demme met Springsteen in 1985 on the video shoot for "Sun City," but had not seen him since. Demme first cut the title sequence of Philadelphia to "Southern Man" and asked Neil Young to write a song like it for the movie. Young gave him "Philadelphia," which he used at the end of the film. Still needing a song for the open, he called Springsteen. Demme asked Springsteen for a rock song to open his movie. Bruce started writing it based on lyrics he had previously written about the death of one of his friends, but it did not work over a rock beat. Springsteen sent what he came up with to Demme, considering it an unfinished demo. Demme loved it and felt it was perfect for his movie just as it was.
