In “True Refuge” two finger-picked acoustic guitars are playing the same pattern, but out of phase with each other. I wanted to create the sound of two flickers of light in motion. In moments the two guitars are in synch, and in other moments they’re out of synch, but the parts are always working together as the arrangement builds up, breaks down, and swells again into a crescendo." Producer Scott Litt recalled to Mojo: "I kinda stole the hand claps and finger snaps from 'Under Pressure.' And Michael (Stipe) pulled a kind of John Lennon move, like how Lennon would ask for his vocal to sound like he was on the moon? Michael said he wanted to sound completely detached, like in another place. So we rigged up a Sony Walkman that would record directly to tape. So you get that weird compressed sound, and Michael actually recorded it in a garage at Prince's Paisley Park Studio in Minneapolis, which was where we mixed Out of Time."

The first Art of Noise album, Who's Afraid of the Art of Noise? was released in 1984. During this period, the group presented themselves as faceless (using masks, minimal personal appearances, or even absence from promotion to indicate that the Art of Noise was not a standard rock or pop band which promoted and mythologised its members as individuals). Band member Anne Dudley in an interview: "There's a very big risk in America because they think we're black; we were voted the second best new black act. We are wondering how we can quite cope with this."

David Bowie personally selected The Dandy Warhols to play at his Meltdown festival in 2002. Bowie also joined the band onstage to perform "White Light/White Heat" during the gig. The Dandys later supported Bowie on his 2003 A Reality tour.
This was the band's breakthrough hit in the US. It's success originated from MTV, which had only just come on air, showing their video of the band in the Sri Lankan jungle.

Happy birthday to Peter Hook! In an interview he said that Ian Curtis was the main difference between their songwriting for Joy Division and New Order. "When we were Joy Division, myself, Bernard [Sumner] and Stephen [Morris ] would jam a lot and get our ideas that way," he explained. "Ian would be listening to us playing and would say, 'That sounds good, that bit is great, do that bit again...' he was like a conductor in that respect."
"As New Order it was very different because we had lost Ian, which meant we had to change our way of songwriting, and it also meant that we had to start doing the lyrics ourselves," Hook continued. "It took us a while to get used to doing that."
This was a double A-sided UK #1 along with "Precious." The Jam became the first act since The Beatles, who performed "Day Tripper" and "We Can Work It Out" to perform both tracks of double A side on the BBC pop music show Top Of The Pops.
