The lyrics deal with getting a second chance ("So darn glad he let me try it again") and making the most of it. Strangely, Wonder recorded it three months before he was almost killed on his way to a benefit concert in Durham, North Carolina. The car he was riding in was behind a truck carrying a load of logs, which stopped suddenly, sending a log through the windshield and hitting Wonder in the head. The accident put Wonder in a coma for four days. His road manager and good friend, Ira Tucker Jr., knew that Stevie liked to listen to music at high volume, so he tried singing this song directly into his ear. At first he got no response, but the next day, he tried again and Wonder's fingers started moving in time with the song - the first sign that he was going to recover. Recalling his time in the coma, Wonder said, "For a few days I was definitely in a much better spiritual place that made me aware of a lot of things that concern my life and my future and what I have to do to reach another higher ground. This is like my second chance for life, to do something or to do more and to face the fact that I am alive."

This song was written in reaction to an incident where the BBC DJ, Steve Wright, played the trite and spunky Wham! track, "I'm Your Man," following a news report about the Chernobyl disaster – a devastating nuclear accident that occurred on April 16, 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine. Guitarist, Johnny Marr, recalled to NME in 1987: "'Panic' came about at the time of Chernobyl. Morrissey and myself were listening to a radio report about it. The stories of this shocking disaster comes to an end and then immediately we're off into Wham's 'I'm Your Man.' I remember actually saying, 'What the f*ck has this got to do with people's lives?' And so, 'Hang the blessed DJ.' I think it was a great lyric, important and applicable to anyone who lives in England."

["Down Boy"] begins poignant and self-reflective, as Karen O's subdued vocals coo, quietly drawing you in. Then, as if a storm has suddenly erupted, you're greeted with an explosion of distorted guitars and thumping drums while O shifts to her signature shrieking vocals. It strikes that delicate balance that's so hard to achieve, but which they often make seem effortless. Read a discussion of the 15 best Yeah Yeah Yeah songs:pigeonsandplanes.com

Lou Reed left right after the album "Loaded" was in the can. As told in "The Velvet Underground: An Illustrated History of a Walk on the Wild Side", for June-to-August of 1970, the Velvets were booked at Max's Kansas City in New York City. August 23, Reed had played two sets when he simply left the stage, walked up to producer Steve Sesnick, said, "I quit," and walked out the back door, got into his parents' car (they drove down from Long Island), and rode away, without any drama or fuss. In Reed's historic 1971 interview with Lester Bangs for Creem magazine, Reed stated that the breakup wasn't anybody's fault, but just the way the music business is - he left because he wasn't making any money, and felt that they'd never be successful.
