The album was placed 136th on Rolling Stone's 2003 list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, with the following review:
“Singer-guitarist Paul Westerberg once cited Tim's stylistic bookends to describe both the longevity of the Replacements' influence and their lack of mainstream success. "My style is ultimately both kinds of things," he said. "Sometimes you just love the little acoustic songs, and other times you want to crank the goddamn amp up, and those two parts of me are forever entwined." That cognitive dissonance — the Stonesesque swagger of "Bastards of Young," the unpolished reflection in "Swingin Party" — became a crucial template for grunge, alternative country and, recently, the noisy introspection of emo."
The band were finding it difficult to nail this song and decided to take a break and catch a Jeff Buckley gig at Highbury. When they returned to the studio mesmerized by Buckley's set, Yorke sang the song twice before breaking down into tears.

Dummy peaked at number 2 on the UK Album Chart, and saw two of its three singles reach number 13. The album was certified gold in 1997 and has sold two million copies in Europe. Dummy also won the 1995 Mercury Music Prize, beating PJ Harvey's To Bring You My Love, Oasis' Definitely Maybe, and Tricky's Maxinquaye.

Stipe says that he considers this an "answer song" to "Eat for Two." He explained in the book It Crawled From The South by Marcus Gray: "It's a male perspective on pregnancy, which I don't think has been dealt with. There's a real push-me-pull-me issue, saying, 'I had nothing to do with it,' yet on the other hand saying, 'Wait, I have feelings about this.'"

In 2007, the British producer, Mark Ronson re-orchestrated this song with "You Keep Me Hangin' On" by The Supremes. The cover attracted severe criticism from many Smiths fans, including Alex Turner, front man of the Arctic Monkeys, who told NME: "Let me tell you what I can't stand - that fucking R&B cover version of 'Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before.'" The song was a smash hit, peaking at #2 on the UK chart – the highest ever chart position for a Smiths song. Ronson later defended his decision to re-orchestrate the track and even claimed Morrissey and Marr approved of the cover: "I found out that Morrissey liked it, and especially liked Daniel's vocal, you can imagine how I felt when Marr approved it as well. This is not an apology but a way of showing respect for people who love The Smiths like I do."

MTV launched in 1981, and for a few years their playlists were heavy with British bands who had been making videos for some time, simply because there wasn't much else available . Dylan recorded this in New York City with Charlie Daniels. Ron Cornelius, who played guitar on these sessions, told us that Dylan would play down the song, but as soon as they started recording he would play it in a completely different tempo, which threw off the musicians but forced them to play to their strengths.
