Martin Luther King, Jr was murdered in 1968, 50 years ago today. Three days after he was assassinated, Nina Simone and her band played at the Westbury Music Festival on Long Island, N.Y. "MLK Song," features words from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s speech "The Drum Major Instinct" and music by M. Ward. The album was produced by Jeff Tweedy.
Written about both Dr King and Rodney King, the LA taxi driver who was the victim of Los Angeles Police Department brutality.
This was the last speech delivered by Martin Luther King Jr. King spoke on April 3, 1968, at the Mason Temple (Church of God in Christ Headquarters) in Memphis, Tennessee. the next day, he was assassinated.
The song had been intended to be based on Ronald Reagan's pride in America's military power, but Stephen B. Oates's book Let The Trumpet Sound: A Life of Martin Luther King, Jr. and a biography of Malcolm X caused the lyricist Bono to ponder the different sides of the civil rights campaigns, the violent and the non-violent. The song contains the erroneous reference to King's shooting as "Early morning, April 4," when it actually occurred after 6 p.m. Bono acknowledges the error and in live performances he occasionally changes the lyric to "Early evening"
This track samples MLK's "I Have A Dream Speech". Here's the speech in its entirety and, yes, the dream is still alive bit.ly
On November 6, 1990, the people of Arizona voted down a proposal to create a state holiday for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by a margin of 17,000 votes. The vote came two years after then-Governor Evan Mecham cancelled MLK Day, saying, “I guess King did a lot for the colored people, but I don’t think he deserves a national holiday.” This song is Public Enemy's response.
