Beach House releases 7 - their appropriately titled seventh LP - on May 11th. Speaking on the creative process behind this album, the band had this to say: "The societal insanity of 2016-17 was also deeply influential, as it must be for most artists these days. Looking back, there is quite a bit of chaos happening in these songs, and a pervasive dark field that we had little control over. The discussions surrounding women’s issues were a constant source of inspiration and questioning. The energy, lyrics and moods of much of this record grew from ruminations on the roles, pressures and conditions that our society places on women, past and present." www.beachhousebaltimore.com

"Firewater was birthed in a Brooklyn basement in the long, hot summer of 1997. Depressed, broke, and desperate, ex-Cop Shoot Cop leader Tod A. tossed away a major label deal and a free meal ticket to launch what--at the time--was a crazy proposition: a punk band fueled by gypsy and klezmer tunes. Tod had stumbled upon a dusty box of records and cassettes in a Russian junk shop on West 14th Street, and had fallen in love with the happy/sad conflict embodied in Eastern European melodies. He wanted to combine the mystery and melodrama of these tragic-comic sounds with the energy of his first love: punk rock." www.bloodshotrecords.com

Possum Kingdom apparently refers to a lake near The Toadies' hometown of Fort Worth, Texas. In a 1995 interview with RIP magazine, Toadies lead singer Todd Lewis, who wrote the song, said: "It's just a story I heard long ago; it's just a really cool, eerie lake, and some stuff I heard and some stuff I just make up. I tend to do that. They dammed up this big river up there, and it's got all these spooky names like Hell's Gate. It's really cool." thetoadies.com

"Take Me With U" was initially intended to be credited to Apollonia 6 and it was included as the first track on an early configuration of the Apollonia 6 album, before being added to the final configuration of Purple Rain, compiled on 14 April 1984 (its inclusion made it necessary for Let's Go Crazy and Computer Blue to be shortened). The recording used on both albums was the same (although edited for time restrictions on Purple Rain), and was always intended as a duet between Prince and Apollonia.

Sub Pop Release 284. Released as a promotional single to promote "Rebound" from Sebadoh's Bakesale, what makes this CD especially significant is the inclusion of the rarity "Social Medicine" and acoustic renditions of other songs in the band's discography. While songs like "On Fire" wouldn't be released until 1996's Harmacy, fans were treated to stripped down versions of the tracks to tide them over until their eventual full-band renditions would be revealed. www.kexp.org

"The songs were written immediately after the Vietnam War and you forget, everybody felt like that then. It didn't matter how old you were, everybody experienced a radical change in the image they had of their country and of themselves. You were going to be a different type of American than the generation that immediately preceded you. A radically different type, so that line was just recognizing that fact. A lot of my heroes influenced that album. But I realized that I was not them. I was someone else; I was not them. I embraced what made us singular, individual."
