"Midnight in a Perfect World" is based around a piano sample from the 1969 song "The Human Abstract" by David Axelrod. The track also samples "Sower of Seeds" by Baraka, "Sekoilu Seestyy" by Pekka Pohjola, "Releasing Hypnotical Gases" by Organized Konfusion, "Dolmen Music" by Meredith Monk, and "California Soul" by Marlena Shaw.

The song was inspired by a negative review of Radiohead's july 7th 2001 gig in their hometown of Oxford. "You had to piss on our parade/you had to shred our big day".

Initially, EMI were hesitant to release the song with its original title of "A Deal with God" owing to possible negative reception because of its use of the word "God". Bush relented and changed the title. However, the album version of the song is listed as "Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)".

Fun fact: the band was initially called "Mr Soft' (later shortened to 'Soft'), and then in 1997 changed their name to Elbow, inspired by a line in the BBC TV drama The Singing Detective in which the character Philip Marlow describes the word "elbow" as the loveliest word in the English language.

The orchestral portions reflect Lennon and McCartney's interest in the work of avant-garde composers such as Karlheinz Stockhausen, Luciano Berio and John Cage. To fill the empty 24-bar middle section, Lennon's requested that the orchestra should provide "a tremendous build-up, from nothing up to something absolutely like the end of the world".McCartney suggested having the musicians improvise over the segment, but there were concerns that classically trained musicians would be unable to do this. A loose score was written for the section, ising the rhythm implied by Lennon singing the words "turn you on".

The song's title is a reference to Agent Orange and its use in the Vietnam War. Michael Stipe has explained that the song is about a young American football player leaving the comforts of home for the war in Vietnam. Stipe opened the song during The Green World Tour by singing the famous U.S. Army recruiting slogan, "Be all you can be... in the Army."
Sam Evian is the project of New York-based musician, songwriter, and producer Sam Owens. He had four rules for recording this album: no tuning pedals; the band could only keep one take of each song; the sessions would be the first time anybody had played these songs; and everybody would eat well.
