Marvin Gaye released his 11th studio album on this day in 1971! It was a concept album that told the story from the point of view of a Vietnam vet returning to the US and seeing only hatred, suffering, and injustice. Gaye's lyrics discuss themes of drug abuse, poverty, and the Vietnam War, and he's been credited with promoting awareness of global warming before the public outcry against it had become prominent.
OK Computer was release on this day in 1997! "No Surprises" was recorded in a single take. Tje guitar arrangement was inspired by the Beach Boys' "Wouldn't It Be Nice", and the band also tried to recreate the mood of Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World" and the soul music of Marvin Gaye.

Hatchie is Australian Harriette Pilbeam. "I wrote 'Sure' about people I know falling in and out of the same relationship issues as we grew out of our teens into early adulthood. When I initially wrote it, it was about a couple that decided to give it 'one more shot' over and over again because they couldn't bare to be apart. When I think about all the lyrics now I realize that it could be interpreted in a number of different ways. My songs always end up taking on new meanings when I look back on them." hatchie.net

Major Tom's second appearance in David Bow song becomes more autobiographical, with references to drug addiction that parallel Bowie's struggles: Major Tom is described as a "junkie, strung out in heavens high, hitting an all-time low".
German singer Peter Schilling retold and continued the story of Major Tom in this 1982 release. translation: "Völlig losgelöst" translates to "completely detached."
In the music video of Bowie's 2015 song "Blackstar" (on the album of the same name, released in 2016 two days prior to the artist's death), a dead astronaut is depicted. His skull is retrieved by an alien female who takes it back to what could be considered a cult which subsequently worships the relic. This astronaut was speculated to be a depiction of Major Tom's final fate. The video's director Johan Renck said on a BBC documentary "to me, it was 100% Major Tom." www.youtube.com

The song's title is from an in-joke within the band; they used to tell one another that they would call "the karma police" on them if they did something bad. Thom Yorke explained that the song is "for someone who has to work for a large company. This is a song against bosses. Fuck the middle management!" Yeah! 🖕

According to Yorn, the name of the song was inspired by a Les Paul Yorn bought at a second hand store. After he got home from the store, he took a shower and had the guitar riff in his head. After he got out, he grabbed his newly purchased guitar and started to play. Unable to think of a name for the song, he glanced at the back of his pre-owned guitar and for the first time noticed the name "Nancy" scrawled into the back of it.
