"Still though, it's a total struggle. When you first get out, you're on this pink cloud, and it's pretty easy. After a while things start getting more real, and you have to just stay straight a second at a time." - Mother Love Bone frontman, Andrew Wood, in one of his last interviews regarding a stint in rehab. He died from a heroin overdose in March 1990. bit.ly

Featuring the vocals of Chris Cornell, who died of suicide on May 18, 2017. Prescribed drugs are believed to have led to impaired judgement, and his wife Vicky stated in an interview afterwards that, “The brain of someone who has a substance use disorder is different from that of … someone who doesn't. He relapsed.”

Kurt Cobain died of suicide on April 5, 1994 due to depression and chronic drug use. "He hadn't called some other people. He hadn't called his family. He hadn't called anybody." Mark Lanegan says he had been "looking for [Kurt] for about a week before he was found. . . . I had a feeling that something real bad had happened." rol.st

"My brother was a father, husband, son, writer, and lead singer for Elephant Boy from Fredericksburg, Virginia. The hole he has left behind is enormous. On my 17th birthday, he gave me a copy of Jeff Buckley's Grace and it changed my life forever. This track was played for my brother on the day he died. Please crank it up loudly and remember all the rock stars that have left us way too soon." - This one's for you Liz, and your brother Geoffrey.

Featuring the use of one of Kurt Cobain's guitars, and written by Michael Stipe after Cobain's death by suicide: "Then, halfway through making Monster, Kurt died. At that point, I just threw my hands up and wrote “Let Me In.” That was me on the phone to him, desperately trying to get him out of the frame of mind he was in… . In the most big-brotherly way—God, I hate that term—in the most genuine way, I wanted him to know that he didn’t need to pay attention to all this, that he was going to make it through."

"Every time I heard Scott sing that he wanted to be sober (and the reasons why!), I knew I had to continue for my children, husband and girls I mentored. Month after month I listened to his words - both of depression and substance abuse. He said words that were buried deep inside me that I was afraid to say out loud! Oh, what he gave to me! I fell off the wagon. Now deeper into depression and alcohol abuse than ever before. This person had helped me. He spoke words to me that others with depression and substance abuse could fully feel with him! He inspired me to try again. And I’m on that path."

David Bowie in a 1996 interview regarding his struggle with substance abuse: "I was in a serious decline, emotionally and socially. I think I was very much on course to be just another rock casualty – in fact, I’m quite certain I wouldn’t have survived the Seventies if I’d carried on doing what I was doing. But I was lucky enough to know somewhere within me that I really was killing myself, and I had to do something drastic to pull myself out of that. I had to stop, which I did." Bowie died from cancer in 2016. bit.ly

"Oh, how I wish that he had overcome his addiction, and have been able to grow into the man that he wanted to be. I loved him dearly, and I will forever wish that he was still here. For all those with stories to tell, keep going, talk about it, reach out to people who will help. We can stop these devastating end results together, through music. This is for my brother, Matthew Dean Tyree, 1-11-1977 to 11-20-2003." - thank you for sharing Carrie, this one's for you.

"I went to the basement to get myself out of the constant cycle of binging, blackouts and bad decisions. I lived inside a swirling fog of total confusion, seeking booze and drama and risk.....It was music, and my dear DJ friends at KEXP who helped me discover the answers to myself, and provided the company and connection I needed to stabilize and start again. Those months in the basement were 9 years ago now, and I haven't had any alcohol since. My life is far richer and more textured without booze, and the music lights my way every day." - Kate, thank you for listening, and sharing this story with us. This one's for you.

The Verve's Richard Ashcroft in 1995 on this song: "There's a new track I've just written [...] It goes 'the drugs don't work, they just make me worse, and I know I'll see your face again'. That's how I'm feeling at the moment. They make me worse, man. But I still take 'em. Out of boredom and frustration you turn to something else to escape."

Jane Bainter (Perry Farrell's former roommate, who was the inspiration for this song) in an interview with Spin: “Jane says, ‘I’m done with Sergio.'” Yeah. Sergio was a drug dealer who lived nearby. He was El Salvadoran and sold drugs to send money home to his family. I was strung out, and he was using that to manipulate me. My parents divorced, and my mother and her new husband bought this house in the south of Spain. I had the opportunity to go over there, but I couldn’t because I was strung out. I had this idea that it was this big reward of mine that if I could just get sober, I could go away to Spain. You know, “I’m going to kick tomorrow.” bit.ly
