"American Girl" is the second single off the band's self-titled 1976 debut album. The single did not chart in the U.S. when it was released (figures!) but in the UK it peaked at No. 40 the week ending August 27, 1977.
This is Downtown Boys covering Selena's "cover" of The Pretenders "Back On The Chain Gang" "Fotos y Recuerdos" was written by Chrissie Hynde with Spanish-language lyrics by Ricky Vela. Lyrically, the song describes a lonely female protagonist who "kisses the photo of her [lover] each night before falling asleep."
"Back on the Chain Gang" was recorded after James Honeyman-Scott, the Pretenders guitarist, died of a drug overdose at the age of 25 on June 16, 1982 and two days after the Pretenders fired their longtime bassist Pete Farndon because of his drug problem. So it was down to Chrissie and drummer Martin Chambers and they pulled in musicians from Rockpile and Tony Butler from Big Country and pulled it off
There's a couple of versions of this Gil Scott-Heron classic. He first recorded it for his 1970 album 'Small Talk at 125th and Lenox', on which he recited the lyrics, accompanied by congas and bongo drums. And a re-recorded version, with a full band, was the B-side to Scott-Heron's first single, "Home Is Where the Hatred Is", from his 1971 album 'Pieces of a Man'
