Good morning and happy Friday (Happy June, too!). 25 years ago, U2's "Zooropa" was quite divisive. Some loved it, while others absolutely detested it. The debate continued in this article from American Songwriter: americansongwriter.com

In an interview with Select magazine, vocalist and primary songwriter Robert Smith said: "I was thinking of Bourbon Street in New Orleans when I wrote it - I was getting ready to go there and I thought: what the f--k do I think I'm going to find ? It's about the incredulity that I could still be fooled into looking for a perfect moment." Watch the official video: www.youtube.com

"There There," came out as a single a few weeks before the 2003 album, "Hail to the Thief." Subtitled "The Money King of Nowhere," the track was nominated for a Best Rock Performance Grammy, but lost out to Warren Zevon and Bruce Springsteen's "Disorder in the Street." "Seven Nation Army" also lost in the same category, so they were in good company.

On the Sound Exploder podcast, lead singer and co-writer Matt Berninger explains: “[‘Sea of Love’ is] a romantic song about a man who’s bitten into the apple a little bit. It’s a big murky mess of all the feelings that happen between human beings when romance and hopes, and all those kinds of things, they run away with our hearts a little bit...."The song’s music video, directed by Sophia Peer, is an homage to the video for “Grubiy Zakat” from Russian indie rock band Zvuki Mu.: www.youtube.com

‘Should I Stay Or Should I Go’ was written by Mick Jones about his girlfriend, American singer Ellen Foley, who sang the backing vocals on Meatloaf’s "Bat Out Of Hell" LP. This song became hugely popular, so The Clash kept playing it at their live shows even after its author and singer was no longer in the band.

Bowie was a great Velvet Underground fan and wrote the song in tribute to the band and Lou Reed. While the main riff is similar to The Velvet Underground's "Sweet Jane", it is actually lifted from Eddie Cochran's "Three Steps to Heaven".

John Lennon helped write this song - he came up with the title and also sang the background "Fame" parts in the high voice. They started working on the song when Bowie invited Lennon to the studio, and Lennon played rhythm guitar on a jam session that resulted in this track. At the end of this song, "Fame" is repeated 23 times, each "Fame" being a different note. The repetitions of "Fame" span an amazing four octaves.

Manchester band PINS write: "The track is about how sometimes we feel like we only exist to make money for other people, it’s a swizz. We are promised things by saviours, these people who have come to rescue us, but it’s not true. “Serve The Rich” was my opportunity to assert myself. I’m saying that we as PINS, musicians, women, Labour voters, and feminists, are here to save the kids, we’re here to save each other, we’re here to save ourselves.": www.stereogum.com

With lots of heavy breathing and a reference to a girl with "hips like Cinderella," this song is often interpreted as something erotic. Pixies frontman Frank Black had something else in mind when he wrote it. He explained: "That song is just about all these f--kin' stupid ass students that live around this neighborhood. Man, oh man, they are the rudest motherf--kers in the world. They're all f--kin' rich, which is fine, I don't care, I wish I was totally rich, but they supposedly come from an upper middle-class background, they're educated, and they're going to private universities, and they are the rudest, most uncouth, most disrespectful people I've ever met on the face of the Earth!

Despite already releasing two albums, the guys were hardly living like rock stars. Peter Buck remembers writing this song with Bill Berry in their humble digs: "I remember Bill and I had a little apartment. God it was a dump. Everything was falling apart, and the only people who lived in the apartment complex besides me and Bill were some people who were living in group homes trying to transition out into the real world. A lot of them hadn't had apartments before, so it was kind of chaotic. "I remember Bill came up with the verse to 'Driver 8,' and after he showed it to me he said, 'I need to run to the market, I'll be right back.' I think he went to get some beans or rice or something. In the meantime, I came up with the chorus and the intro riff. Bill came back in about five minutes, and it was done. So I played it for him and he went, 'Alright, that's great!' Bill was totally excited.

The Soup Dragons were a Scottish band who were named after a character in the British children's TV show, The Clangers. This is a reggae-infused version of an old Rolling Stones song. The Stones originally released it as a B-side to the United States version of their single "Get Off My Cloud" in 1965. The song isn't a pure cover, as it takes many musical liberties and alters the lyrics. But it's similar enough that Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, the writers of the original, are credited as the only composers on the Soup Dragons version.
