In a 2009 interview, Justin Vernon said Blood Bank was actually recorded during the For Emma sessions, but that it didn't quite fit in the record. "It just didn't seem to fit the story and lineage, I guess," he says. "So I just sort of surrounded 'Blood Bank' with three other songs that were very different from one other, and they all kind of came together as a palette cleanser for the last record."

Neil Tennant said in an interview, "We arrived in the studio and Bobby O had programmed Michael Jackson's Billie Jean drum pattern. Chris started to play along and I started playing chords. In terms of the lyrics, the inspiration for West End Girls came from The Message by Grandmaster Flash. I remember once staying at my cousin's house in Nottingham and we were watching some kind of gangster film with James Cagney, and just as I was dropping off to sleep, the lines 'sometimes you're better off dead, there's a gun in your hand and it's pointing to your head' came into my head and I thought 'that's quite good' so I went off to find a pen."

Rolling Stone said of Avalanche: "the 1971 LP's creepiest moments come on opener "Avalanche," which finds Cohen playing his classic role of stygian bard to perfection. Over rolling flamenco guitar and swelling strings, he portrays a hunchback living at the bottom of a gold mine: "Your laws do not compel me/To kneel grotesque and bare," he sneers. Even as the song edges into dark obsession and, eventually, pure horror ("It is your turn, beloved/It is your flesh that I wear"), Cohen's voice maintains a trancelike composure. No wonder gloom-rock poet laureate Nick Cave has been covering the song for more than 30 years."

This album polarized Arcade Fire fans. Win Butler said of the album: “Part of me hopes that this record is our stinker, our horrible record,” he said. “Because if it is, then we may be the greatest band of all time. It’s pretty funny to me. If that’s the worst thing we can possibly do then I’m at peace.”

"The music was written during the rehearsals and recording that led to the Naked LP," recalled David Byrne in the liner notes of Once in a Lifetime: The Best of Talking Heads. "I wrote the words later for the opening scene of Wim Wenders' Until the End of the World. The movie is supposed to take place in the year 2000, so I spent a lot of time trying to image music of the near future: post-rock sludge with lyrics sponsored by Coke and Pepsi? Music created by machines with human shouts of agony and betrayal thrown in? Faux Appalachian ballads, the anti-tech wave? The same sounds and licks from the 60s and 70s regurgitated yet again by a new generation of samplers? The Milli Vanilli revival? Rappin' politicos… sell your soul to the beat, y'all? Well, it was daunting… so I figured, hell with it, I'd imagine Talking Heads doing a reunion LP in the year 2000, and them sounding just like they used to."

Perry Farrell (Blender magazine, December 2006): "Around 1984, I rented a big house on Wilton, near Hancock Park, right in the heart of everything good in Hollywood, but the whole neighborhood seemed deteriorated. I deceived the landlord into thinking I was a gay interior decorator rather than a Punk rocker, and one of my housemates was Jane, this strangely beautiful, well-to-do girl who got caught up in the drug scene and fell in love with a dealer named Sergio. Jane was an intellectual and knew how to act aristocratic, even with a needle and a spoon on the table. I'm not sure if the song mythologized the neighborhood - St. Andrew's Place is nothing special to look at - but I do think it glamorized her life in a way. That was a great time, though. When the landlord found out I wasn't a gay interior decorator, he came after me with a gun."

Björk started writing this song about "a grocer, very close to me, in a little shop." She told Sounds in 1987: "Then I found out it was about some old guy who's living close to me... it changed very often. Then finally, I just had to write it down, and I sort of collected memories together in my head, like when I was a kid, all old men that influenced me sort of erotically, without doing anything, really. Men at 50 and stuff like that. But, you know, without doing anything... so that's the feeling."

Pop Life was released on this date back in 1985. The song includes a portion that features the sound of bell ringing for a boxing match, followed by the sound of a restless crowd with someone yelling "throw the bum out!" This was rumored to be taken from an actual concert in 1981 when Prince opened for The Rolling Stones in Los Angeles. Relatively unknown at the time, the crowd booed him off stage. He returned for the second show, getting a better reception, but with still some booing; Prince quit the tour shortly after. In reality, the bits are from a sound effects library.

Chance happenings often lead to the best of results. Such is the case on the latest collaborative single from Maribou State and Khruangbin, “feel good.” In “feel good,” the English electronic duo and the Texas-based band have delivered a musical experience that is more than just an extremely enjoyable listening experience; it’s a musical expedition into the interweaving fabrics that make up music as a whole. As Liam of Maribou State shared on the new music and forthcoming album, “The idea with Maribou State was always to draw on influences from different parts of the world. By traveling, sampling, recording, we wanted to create this all-encompassing thing.”

Two versions of this song exist. The most famous one, on Pleased To Meet Me, starts with a bass line and features horns. The original, found on the Tim demo sessions, has the guitar starting the song and is about committing suicide. The record company felt that Pleased To Meet Me, with suicide paean "The Ledge," didn't need any controversy over having two songs about suicide, so the lyrics to this song were altered.
