Liza Violet of Menace Beach on this new album: “There’s always been a bit of artistic push and pull between us on the balance of synth noise vs guitars noise and the guitars have previously always taken over, probably because we all know now how to make loud guitars sound really exciting in a room. But when we started writing this record I was feeling too much reality in the sound of a guitar and I really wanted to give something more this time. Once I had the sounds in my head I couldn’t really compromise."

Anthony Gonzalez cited English band Tears for Fears and Scottish band Cocteau Twins, as well as John Hughes teen films The Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles, as inspirations for Saturdays = Youth. A girl resembling Molly Ringwald appears on the album cover, and the lyrics and music video for "Graveyard Girl" further highlight these influences. "I wanted to have the feeling of a teenager mixed with this period of the Eighties," Gonzalez said. The song tells the story of a goth girl Gonzalez once knew who "worships Satan" but "dreams of a sister like Molly Ringwald."

Ian McCulloch: "I’ve always said that The Killing Moon is the greatest song ever written. I’m sure Paul Simon would be entitled say the same about Bridge Over Troubled Water, but for me The Killing Moon is more than just a song. It’s a psalm, almost hymnal. It’s about everything, from birth to death to eternity and God – whatever that is – and the eternal battle between fate and the human will. It contains the answer to the meaning of life. It’s my “To be or not to be …”"

Pearl Jam covered Timeless Melody in their Binaural Tour on 6/4/2000 when they played at The Manchester Evening News Arena, Manchester, England. During the concert Eddie Vedder incorrectly stated that the band was going to play a song written by a band from "your town" (The La's are from Liverpool). Pearl Jam went on to play the song several more times on the tour, often as a duet with Supergrass frontman Gaz Coombes. Pearl Jam have also performed the song with Death Cab for Cutie.

With Martin the songs often turned out different, sometimes better, sometimes not."

There are no rhymes in this song, which is quite a feat of songwriting. In an interview, Gerry Beckley of America (no relation) broke it down: "The entire song is prose. There's not one line that rhymes and I will tell some of the best songwriters you've ever met that particular element and you can see them stop and go through it in their head. We're oblivious to that being an ingredient because we're so involved in the story. You're not sitting there going, 'That didn't rhyme, wait a second.' It's not an issue."

This track is from Clodhopper’s long out-of-print album, Red’s Recovery Room. A project of Danny Pearson (ex-American Music Club), Clodhopper played music that was as influenced by early 20th century folk music as it was by the ’90s alt-country movement. Resting on a steady groove and a dancing clawhammer banjo lead, “Cafe Joli” is a modern take on early 20th century folk music. Weary yet optimistic, Pearson’s conversational vocal style tells a quasi-stream of consciousness tale of his daily adventures around the town. When the rousing chorus comes around, Pearson rallies his bandmates around a refrain of the titular restaurant. “Cafe Joli” captures the intimacy of a campfire singalong and translates it into something much bigger – a folk song that sounds just as great, if not better, today as it did twenty years ago.

This album is one of the first albums to combine a live jazz band with hip hop production and rapping. It is the first such project to feature established rappers. Live backing is provided by a band that includes Lonnie Liston Smith, Branford Marsalis, Ronny Jordan, Donald Byrd and Roy Ayers. The album also features vocal collaborations with Carleen Anderson, N'Dea Davenport (of the Brand New Heavies) Dee C Lee and French rapper MC Solaar. The variety of guest artists adds diversity and originality to each track, and gives the album a distinct jazz feel. Check out the video: bit.ly

DJ Premier: “‘Jazz Thing’ is what really got me my deal because Spike Lee saw our ‘Words I Manifest’ video. He said he saw the Malcolm X resemblances, and he was making Mo' Better Blues at the time. He bought our album, No More Mr. Nice Guy, and he heard the song ‘Jazz Music’ on that. He was doing Mo' Better Blues about jazz, so he was like, ‘Yo, I like the record that ya’ll did, but ya’ll didn’t do an in-depth version of it. Why don’t you do a re-make and update it? I got this guy who wrote this poem that has everything in there. His name is Lolis Eric Elie.’ The poem didn’t rhyme, so Guru just looked at that and took certain lines in that poem and added his little parts, and made it into a verse. And that was our thing, which caught the attention of Chrysalis Records. When they signed us, they thought we were going to do records like ‘Jazz Thing’ all the time. When we were just doing that for Mo' Better Blues.”

This was Lauryn Hill's debut solo single. The song is a warning from Hill to African-American men and women caught in "the struggle". Both the women who "[try to] be a hard rock when they really are a gem", and the men who are "more concerned with his rims, and his Timbs, than his women", are admonished by Hill, who warns them not to allow "that thing" to ruin their lives. The chorus has been praised for promoting egalitarianism between the sexes.

This came out 25 years ago. I'll let that sink in. ... The song makes notable mention of the Birdland jazz club in New York City in its opening line, "Ladies and gentlemen, as you know, we have something special down here at Birdland this evening: a recording for Blue Note Records." The line, spoken by Pee Wee Marquette, is taken from Art Blakey's first Birdland album, A Night at Birdland Vol. 1.

Q-Tip originally planned for “Butter” to be another mic-trading session, but Phife wanted the track for himself. “We had a quasi little tiff over it,” the former told VH1 in 2011. Eventually, Phife wrested control, and turned “Butter” into a lyrical showcase where he ironically contrasted his “smoothness” with his frequent girl problems. Meanwhile, Tip rocked on the hook. “How I was on the chorus and how [Phife] was doing the rhyme … it just felt like if it was the Beatles, and John would sing lead on one and then Paul would sing lead on another and John would be backing him up,” said Tip.

Remembering John Coltrane who passed away 51 yeas ago today. Coltrane helped pioneer the use of modes and was later at the forefront of free jazz. He led at least fifty recording sessions, and appeared on many albums by other musicians, including trumpeter Miles Davis and pianist Thelonious Monk. Over the course of his career, Coltrane's music took on an increasingly spiritual dimension. Coltrane remains one of the most influential saxophonists in music history. He received many posthumous awards and recognitions, including canonization by the African Orthodox Church and a special Pulitzer Prize in 2007.

This song is a plea for reconciliation from a lover who has been hurt, and it shows Andy Bell's ability to pour his heart out in his lyrics, which is something Clarke struggles with. In an interview with Vince Clarke, he said: "I've tried to write lyrics that perhaps express the way I feel sometimes. I've struggled with that feeling. I find it easier to write lyrics about someone else's situation other than my own. I can't with any of my songs, say Yeah, that was me when I was half drunk, hung over or something or other. They're more situations about other people. Andy is much better at offering his heart to the world and expressing how he feels, he's a king at that, I think."

Sub Pop release #1028. Seattle hip-hop artists Macklemore & Ryan Lewis teamed up with Sub Pop in 2012 to release a 7” of their track “Same Love.” The song was released in sync with Music 4 Marriage Equality’s push to get Washington state’s Ref 74 (which would go on to pave the way for same sex-marriage not only in Washington but across the country) approved. The track, which was inspired by Macklemore’s gay uncles, features delicate keys, a moving feature from Miranda Lambert and a well-crafted and genuine appeal for same-sex marriage rights.
