Happy birthday to Catherine Wheel's Rob Dickinson, born on this day in 1965. (Fun fact: Iron Maiden's frontman Bruce Dickinson is his cousin..)
The tremolo effect was created by running the original guitar track through the studio desk into three separate Fender Twin Reverb amplifiers, each with the tremolo control set to a different oscillation speed.

This track was the lead single from their debut album "Oh, Inverted World". Written by guitarist and vocalist James Mercer, it concerns his hometown of Albuquerque, New Mexico and his experiences there in his late 20s. The lyrics are fueled with "angst and confusion," as Mercer was finding himself constantly depressed and disconnected from his friends and scene.
They'll be in Seattle September 20th at the Showbox. www.devotchka.net
"A love song to Seattle through a gritty and dusty old lens." Read more here in a great post by the band about the meaning behind this track: www.facebook.com
"Too Many People" was apparently written as a dig at former bandmate and songwriting partner John Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono: "the first line is about "too many people preaching practices". I felt John and Yoko were telling everyone what to do. And I felt we didn't need to be told what to do. The whole tenor of the Beatles thing had been, like, to each his own. Freedom. Suddenly it was "You should do this". It was just a bit the wagging finger, and I was pissed off with it. So that one got to be a thing about them."
“Happiness Reigns” was not only inspired by Omori’s current girlfriend—she was also involved in his vision for bringing the love song a la Beatles or Rolling Stones “into the 21st century.” “Seldom are songs actually about girls in my life, but I when I choose to write them I try to act in conspiracy with my ‘muse,’” he says. “On ‘Happiness Reigns,’ I was consciously trying to prevent the song from lyrically falling into this one-way ode to an idolized muse. Of course some of my favorite artists like T-Rex or John Cale have albums chock full of them but my intention was never to be a rock classicist or to make something that was an extension of my influences. So I had her write it with me. If I was going to write this about someone, even in vague terms, I thought it would be interesting to intertwine their perception of themselves and of our relationship.” www.subpop.com

The Cure recently played a huge concert at London's Hyde Park. Rolling Stone reported that Robert Smith did *not* dissolve into a pile of dust in the hot sun: "Even Robert Smith himself was astonished that he didn’t evaporate immediately the second he stepped onto the surprisingly hot stage at London’s Hyde Park Saturday evening. It was about a quarter past 8 and the sun was still bearing down in full force – about 83 degrees Fahrenheit – and beaming right at the Cure frontman. “I honestly can’t talk until the sun goes down,” said the singer, who was covered entirely in black, save for his head and hands. “It’s taking all my energy not to dissolve into a pile of dust.” www.rollingstone.com
In an interview, lead singer Andrew Wyatt explained that the song has an ambiguous meaning, "It can deal with addiction. It can deal with just the basic instincts – some of them are wonderful and some of them are very dangerous."
Check out the video for “I Feel Free,” in which singer Katie Monks attempts to exhume her bandmates from their graves and revive them with cigarettes and a Flying V guitar. 🤘 www.youtube.com

"I want to go beyond gender. I don’t want to have to choose between the male and female in me. I’m fighting against feeling an outsider and trying to find a place that feels like home,” Calvi wrote online, going on to describe her new music as “primal and beautiful, vulnerable and strong”. annacalvi.com

Back in the mid-1990s, director Edgar Wright was still in his early 20s and living on welfare in London when he became mildly obsessed with a song called “Bellbottoms”. It sparked an idea in the aspiring filmmaker.
“At first, I envisioned a car chase. Then gradually, I thought of a scene in which a bank robber was in a car listening to ‘Bellbottoms,’ and around the 2 ¹/₂ – minute mark when the song kicks off, the chase starts.”
Upcoming shows: They're playing the SPF30 festival on Alki Beach August 11th, and the Neptune on September 29th. www.subpop.com

Recorded entirely over the course of one evening, “Silver Dollar” imagines the fallout of a hit-and-run, with the culprit leveraging their social status to avoid justice for their actions. Hmm .. sounds familiar. www.hardlyart.com

For Christopher!! Have an awesome trip to Seattle!
Sub Pop catalog number 1065 is actually a combination of two Soundgarden EP's, Sub Pop 12 (aka Screaming Life), Sub Pop 17 (FOPP) and Sub Pop #25 (a compilation called Sub Pop 200). This marks the first time these tracks were available digitally and the first time in decades they were on vinyl. And the whole shebang was remastered by the great (and original producer) Jack Endino.
