NOW (at last!)....Good morning and happy Friday. Thanks for all the requests that have already come in... The theme of aging is detailed in this song. Guy Garvey explained: "It mourns the fact you can't see all your friends every night like you can when you're young." Garvey said: "There's a line in it - 'we only come this way but once' - which is actually a bastardisation of William Penn (founder of Pennsylvania). He was talking about realising you only have one life, realising your own mortality."

“A Day in the Life"...is my idea of a perfect song. It is the epitome of The Beatles’ master building, of fitting stone upon stone, each section troweled together with such ingenuity and care that upon completion the whole thing feels seamless, a structure not built at all, but a whole that simply was." "The track starts out with the soft sound of a wind chime. I think this works as a separation from whatever you were listening to or doing before, allowing you to change your state of mind. The second you start to be intrigued, the booming synths crash in. It’s just so beautiful in its simplicity. The synths go on, playing both the bass line and the melody with some faraway drums, and are soon joined by a guitar line that echoes the synth melody. Robert Smith only starts singing 2 minutes and 37 seconds into the song: almost half way through. And his voice is softer than usual. It’s clear he wants to music to dominate this track, and it works...." Here's an analysis of a song that "makes you cry/and saves your life": neverletmedown.wordpress.com

“I think we were still surfing on the wave of creative energy from Achtung Baby and the Zoo TV tour when we were making Zooropa." the Edge said. "It was the same burst of inspiration. When we were working on Achtung Baby, we were looking to discover new sonic terrain – and on this record that was already established, so we were more confident of what we were doing.": diffuser.fm

The bass riff that plays throughout this song is based on a riff lead singer Thom Yorke came up with at age 16. The horn section was made up of eight Jazz musicians from the St. John's Orchestra. Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood conducted them, but since they didn't really know how to conduct, they jumped up and down when they wanted them to play faster and made calming gestures if they wanted the music slower.

The saxophone in this song was played by David Sanborn, who was just starting to get noticed when Bowie brought him in to play on this. Bowie hired Luther Vandross, who had yet to establish himself as a solo artist, to sing backup and create the vocal arrangements on the Young Americans album.

David Bowie talked about this song's connection to the concept album "Ziggy Stardust": “Ziggy was in a rock 'n' roll band, and the kids no longer want rock 'n' roll,” There’s no electricity to play it. Ziggy’s adviser tells him to collect news and sing it, ’cause there is no news. So Ziggy does this, and there is terrible news. ‘All the Young Dudes’ is a song about this news. It is no hymn to the youth as people thought. It is completely the opposite.”

The Passengers were a collaboration between U2 and Brian Eno. U2 considered it a side project, so they used a different name. Italian Opera singer Luciano Pavarotti sang on this with Bono. Pavarotti enters this song at two minutes and 53 seconds singing an Italian language libretto written by Bono. The Irishman claimed that he was impersonating his opera buff father singing in the bath impersonating Pavarotti.

Thank you, Elizabeth, for the Kate Bush request. Kate Bush said the song is " about a relationship between a man and a woman. They love each other very much, and the power of the relationship is something that gets in the way. It creates insecurities. It's saying if the man could be the woman and the woman the man, if they could make a deal with God, to change places, that they'd understand what it's like to be the other person and perhaps it would clear up misunderstandings. You know, all the little problems; there would be no problem.": www.youtube.com

Congratulations, Tom and Maggie, on your years of marital bliss. Producer Steve Albini used some unusual recording techniques on "Surfer Rosa" as he was desperate to avoid "the studio sound." For instance, he moved all the studio equipment to its bathroom in the hope of achieving a real rather than studio echo on bassist Kim Deal's backing vocals for this and her lead vocals on "Gigantic." Albini later admitted that the record could have been completed in a week were if not for the time wasted experimenting on projects like this.

Van Morrison is 73 years old today. He was born on this date in 1945. In the third verse, the line "Making love in the green grass" was overdubbed with a line from the first verse, "Laughin‚ and a-runnin‚" to make it more radio-friendly. The 1990 Best Of Van Morrison CD released the censored version, apparently by someone unaware that there were two versions.

This song was released in April 1980 and, like Joy Division's other singles, it didn't chart. A month later, depressed over a broken marriage and poor health, Ian Curtis hanged himself. Journalist Matthew Greenwald likened the song’s style to the early 1970s sound of the Rolling Stones. He adds: “Lyrically, on the surface, it’s a hot lovers plea; however, it could easily be taken as a plea to society as a whole. Like a lot of Nilsson’s greatest songs, it works on many different levels.” Stephen Thomas Erlewine describes the track as “surging hard rock”, while James Parker of The Atlantic calls it “livid, dragon-bones funk”. This sultry track was conceived by Love And Rockets guitarist Daniel Ash, who also handled lead vocals. "I'd gone to a party on Saturday night, and I was married at the time, and I saw this woman over the other side of the room, and I was completely transfixed which is very odd because I was freshly married," he said in an interview. "It was very weird, but I was completely infatuated by her and so much so that I couldn't go near her to even speak to her, it was just this overwhelming thing. I can't explain it to this day. That's why the first line is, 'I don't know what color your eyes are.' Because I didn't get that close, I just saw this person in the distance."
