Chris Cornell: "I don't know how everyone else feels ... but I definitely go through periods of extreme self-confidence, feeling like I can do anything. Perhaps a fan will sense that, like in a performance, and the hero image creeps out. But then someone will say something, however insignificant, or I'll get something in my head and, all of a sudden, I'm plummeting in the opposite direction, I'm a piece of shit, and I really can't do anything about it. That's where "Outshined" comes from, and why I'll never consider myself a hero."
From the band's second album. This is the first "half" of the album that are in memory of singer Perry Farrell's girlfriend Xiola Blue, who died of a heroin overdose in 1987 at the age of 19.
This track is a tribute to the Samuel Taylor Coleridge poem "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner." (Fun fact: During the recording of the song's final chorus, guitarist Brian McMahan became physically sick from the strain of yelling over the guitars. 🤢 )

The "Karen" in this song's title refers to Karen Carpenter, who tragically died from complications related to anorexia nervosa in 1983. “I feel like I’m disappearing - getting smaller every day, but I look in the mirror - I’m bigger in every way”. Kim Gordon was a huge Carpenters fan. Later, Gordon explained "I was trying to put myself into Karen’s body. It was like she had so little control over her life, like a teenager – they have so little control over what’s happening to them that one way they can get it is through what they eat or don’t. Also I think she lost her identity, it got smaller and smaller. And there have been times when I feel I’ve lost mine. When people come and ask me about being famous or whatever and I don’t feel that, it’s not me. But it makes me think about it. The music is definitely about the darker side. But I also wanted to liberate Karen into heaven."
Fun fact: Hole used the song's main riff for their song "Mrs. Jones" on their first album, Pretty on the Inside..

Moaning Lisa is "the product of four Canberra-based music grads who find purpose in making loud noises together." Best viewed on a phone." Check it out at www.youtube.com
The band explain the concept behind this track: “The idea of that song lyrically is that it’s this character ‘The Rover’ who is basically preaching a doomsday type message – but he’s also just a very charismatic and magnetic figure. Once I had envisioned that as the concept and this character that I wanted to describe, it became fun wavering back and forth between his doomsday prophesying and his manipulative word choice and how he’s basically trying to get people to follow him." interpolnyc.com
New from the London trio. (Bio: "We're like The Ronettes filtered through 80s DIY and riot grrrl with a sprinkling of dashikis." YES!) bigjoanie.bandcamp.com
