"Whatever happens, whether there’s a hard or soft or no border at all, more than ever, we need to trust each other on this small island in the North Atlantic Ocean. It looks like some rough weather ahead, but it’ll be a lot less rough if we navigate it together." - Bono's message from Saturday's U2 show in Belfast.
"'Frostbite' is an intense song for me," says Ellis "It’s a song about the worst night of my life. It was valentines day, I was standing in the snow without shoes on. I literally got frostbite on my feet. I was in a really toxic relationship that made me feel like I was going crazy." ellissongs.bandcamp.com
The album, like the band itself, is named after a locale, and today they’re sharing its title track. “We stumbled into the medieval-fortressed island town of Gallipoli one night and followed a brass band procession fronted by priests carrying a statue of the town’s saint through the winding narrow streets behind what seemed like the entire town,” Zach Condon wrote of the track. “The next day I wrote the song entirely in one sitting, pausing only to eat.” www.beirutband.com
“It was this dream song that just turned up as I was waking up one morning,” Bob Mould recalls. “It came to me fully formed, and then it’s just all the baubles that make it that crazy baroque band thing. All that was pretty much in my head too, but you have to sit down and make these baubles shine. That’s the production stuff.”

Lucy Dacus, recently told Vogue that she was fatigued by the “women in indie rock.” label. “I think it’s great that people are noticing that their favorite music right now is made by women, but I just wish it wasn’t a surprise,” she explained. “The fact that we’re women is kind of the most boring thing that I could think of.”

Black Belt Eagle Scout recently broke down every track on the "Mother of my Children" album. “’Yard’ is one of those songs where I kept the lyrics from how they came out in the conception of the song. If you listen closely, they don’t quite make sense. It’s more of a feeling of words that come out instead of defined poetry. I wanted this song to be quiet and then build up with dynamics at the end to have a big momentous part. The guitar is really only playing two chords in this song, but all of the other parts of the song wake up to help the two chords along." Read more over on the KEXP blog. www.kexp.org

The band explains the song's meaning: "Spring often times feels like breakup season. Living in the Midwest, moving from winter’s isolated closeness to the season of rebirth and transformation means undergoing change yourself. “Haru” explores the insecurity in that. I think I’ve questioned every relationship I’ve been in in the spring. And anything to feed ambiguity or uncertainty obscures your footing. Before lyrics were shared, I was singing oo’s in the chorus until Leslie told me they sounded like “haru,” which serendipitously means “spring” in Japanese." didicolumbus.bandcamp.com

The song's theme is inspired by the Spanish Civil War, and the idealism of Welsh volunteers who joined the left-wing International Brigades fighting for the Spanish Republic against Francisco Franco's military rebels. The song takes its name from a Republican poster of the time, displaying a photograph of a young child killed by the Nationalists under a sky filled with bomber planes, with the stark warning "If you tolerate this, your children will be next" written at the bottom.

Cohen wrote the song when staying at the Penn Terminal Hotel on 34th Street in New York City in 1966. He wrote "The room is too hot. I can't open the windows. I am in the midst of a bitter quarrel with a blonde woman. The song is half-written in pencil but it protects us as we manoeuvre, each of us, for unconditional victory. I am in the wrong room. I am with the wrong woman."

"America" was inspired by a five-day road excursion Simon undertook in September 1964 with his then girlfriend Kathy Chitty.
‘Post-Millennium Tension’ takes inspiration for its title from Pre-Millennium Tension, the 1996 LP from Tricky – an artist whom the band note as a primary influence. “The song was written on the frustrations of our times – particularly those of the younger generation,” Ellery explains. “Through the internet people have gained an awareness of possibility but remain entrapped in the limitations of old. In my understanding, solutions to the world’s problems seem plentiful, yet we remain restrained by the systemic inability to act & held down by those mind made manacles – thus the lyric: “we couldn’t work it out/ we’d sooner live in doubt.”

Speaking about the new single, TVAM's Joe Oxley said: “I’m sick of nostalgia. There’s a real sadness at the heart of it. We’re obsessed with our pop culture past. So much so, we place more worth on the idea of our shared past than on actual memories and I’m guiltier than most other people. The internet is capable of truly amazing things, but being able to recall the theme tune to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles at three in the morning isn’t one of them. The song is about taking society aside and having a quiet word about its shared identity crisis.” tvamindustries.com
