In an interview, Ed O'Brien explained why they often play 15 Step and Morning Bell back-to-back: "Putting '15 Step' and 'Morning Bell' together was deliberate. '15 Step' is in 5/4 and 'Morning Bell' is in 7/8. It's nice to have a bit of clapping, a bit of audience participation, if they can get the beat. In Spain, they love 'Morning Bell' - all the fast clapping is like flamenco music. But in the West, we're not very rhythm-savvy. Anything not in 4/4 is hard for a lot of people."

This became Radiohead's first UK Top 5 single thanks in part to its music promo. The director Jonathan Glazier, was approached by Thom Yorke after the singer had been impressed by Glazier's only previous video, for Massive Attack's "Karmacoma." He would later direct Radiohead's promo for "Karma Police." Glazier told The Guardian Setember 24, 2005: "With Radiohead, it's very much about convincing Thom Yorke of your ideas. But once he's chosen you there's not any interference - he wants you to go off and be experimental. I'd had this idea for ages that I'd seen in nature programs, where they'd film an eagle flying at 1,200 frames per second then cut frames out to slow it down. It's a technique you see in every second ice-cream commercial nowadays but back then it was new. They weren't sure if they wanted to make Street Spirit the next single so I initially wrote this idea up to be used with a different song. We shot the whole thing at night in the desert outside LA. The band are hardly the most rowdy on set. They just slept the whole time. I'd have to wake them once in a while so I could film them being pushed off a chair.

In an interview with Pitchfork, the interviewer commented that this song appeared to be warmer than many of Thom Yorke's previous songs. Yorke replied: "I'd guess one doesn't really need reminding of the ice outside at the moment, do you? It's maybe a good thing to try to make music that feels reassuring in some ways - something that's got a good feeling, a good vibe about it."

The song's refrain of "Everything's gonna be OK," is about the self-delusion that is sometimes necessary for surviving modern life. The band's Dave Sitek told NME: "The 'I keep telling myself...' line means that it might not be true. Everyone goes through that, on multiple levels. There's a lot of doubt floating around. What has modern living and its aspirations led to? ''Trouble' at least for me, is about putting your helmet on."

Lead singer Thom Yorke: "I was pissed in a club, and I suddenly had the funniest thought I'd had for ages - what if all the people who were drinking were hanging from the bottles... if the bottles were hung from the ceiling with string, and the floor caved in, and the only thing that kept everyone up was the bottles? It's also about an enormous fear of being trapped."

Thom Yorke told Rolling Stone magazine in 2006: "'Black Swan' has this tiny, shredded segment of something that was one of the library samples we had. It was Ed (O'Brien guitar) and Phil (Selway drums) doing this thing, and I sliced it into bits. The sample was 2000, but the song was 2005."
