Damon McMahon describes the track: "Miki Dora was arguably the most gifted and innovative surfer of his generation and the foremost opponent of surfing’s commercialization. He was also a lifelong criminal and retrograde: a true embodiment of the distorted male psyche. He was a living contradiction; both a symbol of free-living and inspiration, and of the false heroics American culture has always celebrated. With lyrics of regret and redemption at the end of one’s youth, the song is about Dora, and myself, but ultimately it is a reflection on all manifestations of mythical heroic maleness and its illusions." The Call's Michael Been on the inspiration for this song: "There was a great deal happening politically – Grenada, Lebanon, or the government saying the Russians are evil and the Russian government probably saying the same about us. That kind of thinking inspired me to write the last lines of 'Walls Came Down'."

Frontman Joe Talbot explains the song: ""Samaritans" came about at a time where I realized through counseling that I spent a lot of my life feeling lonely, even though I had such supportive friends and family around. I learned soon after it was down to a certain performative nature to which I related strength to silence, leading to problems as I ended up confused and angry from bottling up my feelings, which in turn then manifested in violence and self-loathing. I wanted to try and explore that in a song that could illustrate that relationship between masculinity and it’s trail of ugly shame and death."

"Miss Sarajevo" is the only single from the 1995 album "Original Soundtracks 1" by U2 and Brian Eno, under the pseudonym "Passengers". Luciano Pavarotti makes a guest vocal appearance, singing an opera solo.
The album's title, The Crane Wife is from an old Japanese folktale. While there are many variations of the tale, a common version is that a poor man finds an injured crane on his doorstep (or outside with an arrow in it), takes it in and nurses it back to health. After he releases the crane, a woman appears at his doorstep with whom he falls in love and marries. Because they need money, his wife offers to weave wondrous clothes out of silk that they can sell at the market, but only if he agrees never to watch her making them. They begin to sell them and live a comfortable life, but he soon makes her weave them more and more. Oblivious to his wife's declining health, his greed increases. He eventually peeks in to see what she is doing to make the silk she weaves so desirable. He is shocked to discover that at the loom is a crane plucking feathers from her own body and weaving them into the loom. The crane, seeing him, flies away and never returns.

"One of the themes of the Cuckoo Spit EP is the difficulty of feeling confident in your decisions when they don’t seem to match up with those of everyone around you. There are plenty of moments where I wonder what the fuck I’m doing with my life, but occasionally there are moments that are exactly the opposite: I’m content with who I am, with the fact that I’ll always be an oddball, and that I’ll probably never be famous or have any money. “I’ll Never Be” is our attempt at crystallizing those moments into a fuzzy psychedelic gospel song."
