Originally released on 'The Colour of Spring' album, this song was one of the last to be conceived for the album following concern from the band's management that there was no obvious single among accumulated work. The band had a drum pattern loosely inspired by Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill" and they built upon that. The song became one of their biggest hits.

Chris Cornell’s contribution to the Singles soundtrack grew out of a piece of fiction: a solo cassette made by Matt Dillon’s Cliff Poncier after parting with his band, Citizen Dick. Cornell took it upon himself to actually write songs for the tape, one of which was this reflective folk ballad. www.rollingstone.com

According to Mr Dylan "This was definitely a song with a purpose. It was influenced of course by the Irish and Scottish ballads …’Come All Ye Bold Highway Men’, ‘Come All Ye Tender Hearted Maidens’. I wanted to write a big song, with short concise verses that piled up on each other in a hypnotic way. The civil rights movement and the folk music movement were pretty close for a while and allied together at that time.”
