UNKLE's James Lavelle explains the new album: "It wasn’t about trying to make people dance in a nightclub. It was a breath of fresh air, and about playing a more eclectic mix. The Road: Part II was made in the same way – it’s a mixtape and a journey. You’re in your car, starting in the day and driving into the night. The language of it was to be the ultimate road trip."

“I just happen to like looking at people and wondering what’s up,” says Tunde Adebimpe, frontman for TV on the Radio. “We got some people together, some of whom we ran into on the street while we were shooting, and did that. We asked if they could quietly (or not) go to brighter or darker places inside themselves let us be there with them for a little while. Everyone’s sifting through something, right?”

Released on this day in 1977. As a recovering cocaine addict, Bowie's songwriting on Low dealt with difficult issues: "There's oodles of pain in the Low album. That was my first attempt to kick cocaine, so that was an awful lot of pain. And I moved to Berlin to do it. I moved out of the coke centre of the world [i.e. Los Angeles, where Station to Station was recorded] into the smack centre of the world. Thankfully, I didn't have a feeling for smack, so it wasn't a threat". Visconti contended that the title was partly a reference to Bowie's "low" moods during the album's writing and recording.

In an interview, Ministry's Jourgensen said this song was partially inspired by his experiences as a child with his stepfather, a stock car driver and mechanic. Commenting on Ministry's work for Spin Alternative Record Guide, writer Eric Weisbard likened it to “an updated, theorized” version of the Trashmen 1963 hit “Surfin' Bird”

Corey Cunningham's Business of Dreams is all about emotional catharsis. When his father passed away a few years ago, Cunningham took leave from his long-running Bay Area/LA musical partnerships Magic Bullets and Terry Malts to return to his home state of Tennessee to grieve and confront his past. Making music to cope with this loss resulted in this, Business of Dreams' lovely eponymous debut album. businessofdreams.bandcamp.com

LCD Soundsystem's debut single! James Murphy explains the inspiration for the song: "I started going to different types of things and meeting different people, and started throwing parties. And all of a sudden, I was kind of cool, I'd always just been a total... not even an outsider, just sort of a nobody, a sort of invisible, sad and kind of shy. And all of a sudden I was DJing, and felt cool, throwing parties. And then one night I went to go see a band, and somebody else was playing the records that I was playing. Nobody else was playing the records that I was playing, that was sort of my thing! And I got really mad, and I got really defensive. And I was like 'What the heck, that's mine! What the--who the hell is this? Some 22-year-old...', and I got really embarrassed by being like 'These aren't your records, you didn't write them, you just... play them, you just own them, you can't be proud of yourself for owning them' but I was mad at the same time because I was like 'I know that kid was at one of my parties...'. It was this really dense conflict that I couldn't resolve, and that's where 'Losing My Edge' came from. "

Fun fact for you young whippersnappers... The original release of this single featured a die-cut sleeve designed to resemble a 5¼" floppy disk. Yes, that's right ... that little "save" symbol in all those new-fangled apps. You might have seen it around in icon form. Well, not only did they have little floppy disks back in the day, but they had big-ass 5 1/4 inch ones, too. This has been your history lesson of the day. NOW GET OFF MY LAWN.

The video for the song is dedicated to Czech student Jan Palach who, in 1969, set himself on fire in protest against renewed Soviet suppression of Czechoslovakia. The video also refers to the Soviet government's intervention in the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 on a banner showing the text in Hungarian (Szabad Európa Rádió) which translates as "Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty".

More new music! Hooray for January! This band out of Oslo describes how they came up with their name: "Recording our EP with our producer Tord Øverland Knudsen, we still had not decided on a name for the band. The upcoming EP “Distant Star” features a song inspired by the score for Steven Spielberg’s “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” While recording, Tord had to sit through hours of heated discussions about a name for the band and the – as it was known then – “Spielberg-song”. Eventually he said: “Guys, why don’t you just call the band “Spielbergs”. And to that we said “OK!”
