This one has a great video: www.youtube.com
Jamila Woods explained that she wrote this she'd recently taught Nikki Giovanni’s poem “Ego Tripping.” "I thought, what would it be like to write a cover poem that’s a song? The lyric “there must be a reason why”—it was cool to think about that. I interpreted that like, there must be a reason why I am the way I am. I thought about the women in my life who make it possible for me to believe in myself, and have faith in myself, that I’m doing right by the people who’ve poured so much love and time and energy into me. "

Yeah, extra positive vibrations on Monday! If you like this and aren't already tuning into Positive Vibrations, KEXP's reggae show every Saturday from 9-noon, you should check it out! www.kexp.org
Due to the song's atypical tuning, The Who guitarist Pete Townshend called The Beat's Dave Wakeling to ask how to play the song:"I got a phone call at 11 in the morning, and somebody gave me the phone and said, “It’s Pete Townshend for you.” And I said, “Of course it is, he phones about this time every Saturday doesn’t he?” Ha ha. I thought it was somebody making a joke. I picked up very sarcastically, 'Oh, hello Pete.' And he said, 'Oh, hello Dave, this is Peter Townshend here and I’m sitting with David Gilmour, and we’re trying to work out your song 'Save It For Later,' but we can’t work out the tuning.' They presumed it was DADGAD as well, and couldn’t make it work, and so I had to explain that I’d made a mistake and it was not DADGAD, it was DADAAD. And he laughed and said, 'Oh, thank heavens for that! We've been breaking our fingers trying to get our hands around these chords.'"

New project from Phoebe Bridgers and Conor Oberst - www.betteroblivioncommunitycenter.org
This track has 2 videos: The first was a statement against the banality of lip-synching and consists almost entirely of footage from wildlife documentaries, interspersed with shots of Talk Talk lead singer Mark Hollis standing in various places throughout the London Zoo. He keeps his hands in his coat pockets and his mouth pointedly shut tight and sometimes obscured by hand-drawn animated lines.
The second version, recorded at the behest of EMI, consisted of the entirety of the original video projected on a green screen behind Hollis on guitar and vocals as well as his two bandmates as they lip-synched and mimed the song, deliberately poorly and with comic exaggerated gestures.
Talk talk, the the ... what's next, Duran Duran? Django Django? The Go-Go's?
Ah yes, the Velvet Velvets 😏 In the liner notes to the Velvet Underground's box set Peel Slowly and See, Lou Reed wrote, "'Rock and Roll' is about me. If I hadn't heard rock and roll on the radio, I would have had no idea there was life on this planet. Which would have been devastating - to think that everything, everywhere was like it was where I come from. That would have been profoundly discouraging. Movies didn't do it for me. TV didn't do it for me. It was the radio that did it."
