The phrase, "What's the story, Morning Glory," was popularized in the 1963 film Bye Bye Birdie, where young ladies use it as a greeting when they pick up the phone, hoping for some good gossip: "What's the story, morning glory? What's the tale, nightingale?" "What's the story, morning glory? What's the word, hummingbird?" According to San Francisco's Melissa Lim, who reportedly inspired Noel Gallagher, he got the phrase from her, as she used it when she answered the phone.

"There are few more startling examples of avant-garde cinema than Un Chien Andalou (it translates literally as ‘an Andalusian dog’), the surrealist fancy dreamed up by artist Salvador Dali and director Luis Buñuel un 1929. There’s no discernible plot and no one utters a word...In the early 80s, it caught the imagination of a young anthropology student in Massachusetts called Charles Thompson. Later, as Black Francis, his noisy surf-punk four-piece the Pixies worked the idea into Debaser....": www.loudersound.com

"The misogyny of the Beastie Boys’ early years was noxious and pervasive. The song “Girls” is both appallingly sexist and entirely typical of the group’s first album...And then a miracle happened: The Beastie Boys heard criticisms about being misogynistic, homophobic jerks and actually listened to them. And changed their behavior. Sexist lyrics stopped appearing in their songs, and the 1994 song “Sure Shot” famously included a verse in which MCA explicitly apologized for the group’s past misogyny...." The song "Pinhead" (1977), contains the lyrics: "Gabba gabba, we accept you, we accept you, one of us." The song ends with: "Gabba gabba hey, gabba gabba hey!..."The phrase comes from a scene in the 1932 motion picture Freaks, in which the title characters chant the line "Gooble, gobble, we accept her, we accept her, one of us, one of us!"

Liverpool band The Wombats' Dan Haggis says, "The story behind the song was about a Norwegian girl that Murph [Matthew Murphy] had been on a few dates with. One night he asked her if she was going out for a few drinks, she said ‘no’ and that she was just going to stay at home. Later that night Murph walked into a bar in Liverpool called Hannah’s bar (incidentally where we played our first ever show in 2003!) and saw the Norwegian girl kissing another girl!":nbhap.com

This is perhaps the most popular song featuring a marimba as a lead instrument. "The Forever Now" album was produced by Todd Rundgren and recorded at his studio, Utopia Sound. It was his idea to use the marimba on this track, and he played it. The demo of the song had a different instrument for those sections, but Rundgren had a marimba in the studio and thought it would be worth a shot. "It turned out that the little musical theme just sounded perfect with the marimbas, and became a signature element of the song," he said. "So it just was a question of availability. It's not like I had to go rent some marimbas. I happened to have them."
