Number 211 on our list. It charted on the American Top-40 for 16 weeks and reached No. 10 in early-1976. It was the first track completed during the Station to Station sessions, a period when Bowie's cocaine addiction was at its peak.
210: "Respect" is a song written and originally released by Otis Redding in 1965. The song became a 1967 hit and signature song for R&B singer Aretha Franklin. Besides hitting number 1 in the US in 1967, Franklin's cover was a landmark for the feminist movement, and is often considered one of the best songs of the R&B era, earning her two Grammy Awards in 1968 for "Best Rhythm & Blues Recording" and "Best Rhythm & Blues Solo Vocal Performance, Female", and was inducted in the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1987. In 2002, the Library of Congress honored Franklin's version by adding it to the National Recording Registry.
"KEXP top 631, Number 209!" According to Mudhoney vocalist Mark Arm, "Touch Me I'm Sick" originated from a discussion with Sub Pop owner Bruce Pavitt, who "said: 'Hey, you sing about dogs. You sing about being sick. You got a shtick, it'll take you to the top.' And he basically gave us five chords, but he said don't use more than three within one song."[3] Arm also states that "Touch Me I'm Sick" was a catchphrase around which the band built a song.
The 208th most popular song in KEXP history according to you, the American people.
Number 207: "Common People" is a song was released in May 1995 as the lead single off their fifth studio album Different Class. It reached number two on the UK Singles Chart. More importantly, THIS is a GREAT example of how amazing the KEXP community is and why you should support it. This song never charted in the U.S., except here. We need your help to support this amazing art so a kid in some other place hears it and it inspires them to do something amazing. 206.903.5397
Number 206. Beck himself has talked about the meaning of "Devils Haircut" on a few occasions. In one interview, he claimed that it was "a really simplistic metaphor for the evil of vanity".
