Released as a single in September 1983 and spent three weeks on the UK charts. Sustained demand for the track helped the single spend *101 weeks* (!) on the UK Indie Charts, a run that ranked fourth in the 1980s after three classic long-selling records: "Bela Lugosi's Dead" by Bauhaus (131 weeks), "Blue Monday" by New Order (186 weeks) and "Love Will Tear Us Apart" by Joy Division (195 weeks).

"“An album is like a Rubik’s Cube,” she says. “Sometimes you get all the dimensions—the lyrics, the melody, the production—to line up. I try to be futuristic and ancient at once, which is a difficult alchemy. It’s taken a lot of different tries to get it right.” Weyes Blood will play May 16th at the Tractor Tavern. weyesblood.bandcamp.com

Beautiful new track from Kishi Bashi about the internment of Japanese Americans. Kishi Bashi says "this is a very important song for me in that it's the finale piece to the symphonic piece I premiered last year. It's a love story set in World War II, about falling in love in an incarceration camp and ultimately losing that love. The significance is that the idea of love, loss, and desire are consistent themes throughout history and help us to empathize with a people in a disconnected past." Kishi Bashi will play Washington Hall on June 16th. www.kishibashi.com

"This song originated with a line I'd been rolling round my head: 'It's a fool's, fool's game, lover, that we have to play.' I wanted to build something that felt like The Shangri-Las or Velvet Underground in their 'Pale Blue Eyes'-period." glenhansard.com

The upcoming album is the first joint recording since 2005’s ‘In the Reins’. Iron & Wine's Sam Beam describes the new album: "“Life is hard. Awesome. And scary as shit. But it can lift you up if you let it,” Beam says in a statement. “These are the things Joey and I write about now. And the title can encapsulate a lot of things. Years to Burn could mean you’re cocky, you’ve got it made. Or, our life is ours to burn, to be inspired. Or you’re burned by life, brutalized. It’s an ambiguous title, because life is complicated.”" They'll be playing shows in Portland and Vancouver on August 23rd and 24th, more info at ironandwine.com

Florence Welch said that a recent month-long tour in support of U2 passed totally soberly. "I used to think it was all part of the performance to go out there, go on tour, and get as drunk as possible. Like, oblivion. Oblivion. Living almost out of control. And I think, now, I feel a bigger sense of responsibility to the fans. To the people who come to see me play." florenceandthemachine.net

Scott Walker passed away today at the age of 76. He influenced many, many bands. Radiohead's Thom Yorke tweeted "he was a huge influence on Radiohead and myself, showing me how i could use my voice and words. Met him once at Meltdown, such a kind gentle outsider. He will be very missed."

Van Etten: "I am so surprised people like that song so much! It was like a joke song. It was at the end of the day in the studio, we were all having a lot of fun, we had done two songs already and it was the choice of the night: finish up early or keep going. It was originally a demo that I wrote on the Omnichord that Heather gave me." www.sharonvanetten.com

In INXS's official autobiography, INXS: Story to Story, Andrew Farriss said that the famous riff to the song appeared suddenly in his head while waiting for a cab to go to the airport to fly to Hong Kong. He asked the cab driver to wait a couple of minutes while he grabbed something from his motel room. In fact, he went up to record the riff and came back down an hour later with a tape to a very annoyed driver.

Tina Weymouth explained in the liner notes of 'Once in a Lifetime: The Best of Talking Heads' that "Chris [Frantz, their drummer] had just been to see Parliament-Funkadelic in its full glory at Madison Square Garden, and he was really hyped. During the jam, he kept yelling 'Burn down the house!' which was a P-Funk audience chant, and David [Byrne] dug the line, changing it to the finished version, 'Burning down the house'."

Frontman Shehzaad Jiwani says this track “is about perspective and understanding during chaotic times. I wanted to superimpose the socially and spiritually conscious energy of the late ’60s onto our current political climate and the pervasive numbness people can feel towards opposing viewpoints when they are exhausted by their news feeds.” The band say influences for the track were the Chemical Brothers, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, the Beastie Boys, and Madonna’s late ’90s hit “Beautiful Stranger.” Also, the track ends with a sample from a PBS documentary about the Black Panthers. carparkrecords.com

The title is from the novel Sophie's World by Jostein Gaarder, which includes this: "Only philosophers embark on this perilous expedition to the outermost reaches of language and existence. Some of them fall off, but others cling on desperately and yell at the people nestling deep in the snug softness, stuffing themselves with delicious food and drink. 'Ladies and Gentlemen,' they yell, 'we are floating in space!' But none of the people down there care."

"Little Fluffy Clouds" sample clips from an interview with Rickie Lee Jones from promotional copies of her album 'Flying Cowboys'. The song also uses a harmonica sample from Ennio Morricone's The Man With The Harmonica (from the film Once Upon a Time in the West) . Alex Paterson also suggested that the drum track is sampled, saying “If anyone actually knew where the drums on 'Little Fluffy Clouds' came from, they'd all just die, but I'm not at liberty to tell." but later said the drum track was sampled from Harry Nilsson's album Nilsson Schmilsson, specifically a slowed-down version of "Jump Into the Fire". The track also includes a Lee "Scratch" Perry sample.

Catherine Wheel covering Scott Walker. Rob Dickinson once spoke about Walker: “I know some very aware musicians and very fine people who have never heard of him. He was a pretty well-kept secret. ‘Scott 3’ and ‘4’ were real works of a deviant musical mind.” The band and Walker shared a record label for a while in the 1990s, Fontana.
