Michael Stipe describes this song as about using people over and over. It's deceptive because it could be a love song until the line, "A simple prop to occupy my time." For a while, Stipe thought this was too brutal a song to record. He said, " "It's probably better that they think it's a love song at this point. That song just came up from somewhere and I recognized it as being really violent and awful. But it wasn't directed at any one person. I would never write a song like that."

Jane's Addiction singer Perry Farrell has announced the release of his first solo album in more than 18 years, "Kind Heaven." It will arrive later this year.
It was produced by the singer and legendary David Bowie collaborator producer Tony Visconti, with a long list of guest performers including Taylor Hawkins (Foo Fighters), Peter Distefano (Porno For Pyros), Elliot Easton (The Cars), as well as other unnamed cameos.

Happy birthday today, 40-year-old Nick! This IS the "Napoleon Dynamite song." When In Rome is a duo consisting of Clive Farrington and Andrew Mann, natives of Manchester, Great Britain. They had been members of a locally popular band called Beau Leisure when they decided to strike out on their own. This song was from their debut LP in 1988 and was an instant hit, reaching #11 on the Billboard Top 100. However, it turned out to be their only major hit. Farrington and Mann went on to other things, but they continued to stay in touch and write together.

"Pets" deals with dissatisfaction with the human race and how it is on the brink of destruction ("My friend says we're like the dinosaurs only we are doing ourselves in much faster than they ever did"). The song then describes how aliens might be able to take over the world and treat humans as pets.

Chris Cornell came up with that line when he was in a dour mood and looked at himself in the mirror. He was wearing his typical outfit of baggy shorts and a T-shirt (high fashion in the '90s), and realized that he looked like a carefree beachgoer, even though he didn't feel like one.
This line crept into the collective conscious and even inspired the name of the 1996 movie "Feeling Minnesota," starring Keanu Reeves and Cameron Diaz.
