Lead guitarist Noel Hogan described this song as “very much a classic Dolores [O’Riordan] song,” with the late singer guiding the track from its soft verse through its massive chorus. “Fighting’s not the answer,” O’Riordan belts, “Fighting’s not the cure/It’s eating you like cancer/It’s killing you for sure/Wake me when it’s over.” O’Riordan and Hogan had begun working on all the songs on the album before the singer’s death last January. After several months of mourning, Hogan and the rest of the Cranberries enlisted producer Stephen Street – who’d previously helmed four Cranberries records – to help them finish the album.

Kishi Bashi: "This is a very important song for me; it’s a love story set in WWII about falling in love in an incarceration camp and ultimately losing that love. Reckoning was released on this date in 1984. R.E.M. was opening for the Human League at the Palace Theater in Los Angeles on June 11, 1983, when they got word of downpours in the South Central region of Georgia. They tried to call their families and friends to make sure they were OK, but the phones were out because of the torrential rain. The band wrote "So. Central Rain (I'm Sorry)" in response to this incident.

The listening experience was a big consideration for Karen O and Danger Mouse in making this album, they said — that's why the first and last song on the album are similarly orchestrated. "It's kind of a circle and you do just want to kind of listen to it on repeat rather than just like a single song off it," Karen O said.

Drake's lyrics often had a painterly quality, and what makes his third album, Pink Moon, so unique is not simply that it dealt with depression, but that it did so in pastel colours rather than the blacks and greys you'd typically expect. Recorded alone over two nights, on acoustic guitar with almost none of the accompaniments that adorned Bryter Layter, it could be stark and unrelenting in places. But for an album written in a state of crippling despair it was often astonishingly pretty. Place to Be, which documents a darkening outlook with the passage of time, is one such moment. Indeed, Drake's vocals sound like they might not quite summon the strength to deliver the final line: "Now I'm weaker than the palest blue / Oh so weak in this need for you."

This song was inspired by scenes noted during the band's UK tour, as keyboardist Jerry Dammers recalled in an interview in the music magazine Mojo, "In Liverpool, all the shops were shuttered up, everything was closing down. In Glasgow there were little old ladies on the streets selling their household goods."

From J.Period's website: "In the Spring of 1970, armed National Guard fired on protesters at Kent State in Ohio, killing four students. The event sent shockwaves across the country, spurring Neil Young to pen “Ohio,” the “greatest protest record” in American history. Days later, forgotten in the shadow of Kent State, police killed two black students at Jackson State in Mississippi. The incident spurred The Isley Brothers to record “Ohio/Machine Gun.” Fusing Neil Young with Jimi Hendrix, The Isleys re-framed the narrative of the song around rising racial tensions, bridging the cultural gap between the two songs as a deliberate statement: music was one of the few forces that could bridge the racial divide and bring people together - cultural connective tissue for a divided world. J.PERIOD is proud to present the next chapter in this historic saga: “SOLDIERS” featuring Dead Prez, Sa-Roc & Maimouna Youssef. Sampling elements of The Isley Brothers’ “Ohio/Machine Gun” over a hard-hitting track featuring Daniel Crawford on drums, “SOLDIERS” re-frames the narrative again for the generation of Ferguson, Flint, Oakland, New Orleans, Sanford, and Charlottesville."

Flavor Flav sang this intentionally out of key. Chuck D. explained: "When you put him in key, it gets syrupy - too close to music. See, when you add noise on top of noise, you gonna tune everybody out. But with Flavor, he becomes the noise, because he is annoying!"

Reckoning was released this day in 1984. Michael Stipe talked to Rolling Stone, November 12, 2009, after releasing their album Live at the Olympia, which included this track. Said Stipe: "It's about a couple of swingers, a straight couple who employ younger men and women and seduce them. I did not succumb. But I was aware of the danger and electricity they created. The reason I said 'Not quite a family story' was three of my goddaughters, all under 14, were in the audience. This was not appropriate for them to hear from their godfather onstage."
