The song's signature hook is a series of claps followed by a shouted "Let's go!", which is derived from the 1962 instrumental of the same name by The Routers.

In "Check the Rhime," A Tribe Called Quest reference the speed of former St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Lou Brock. Although Brock is known for breaking Ty Cobb's record for most stolen bases, he's often criticized for his judgment at the plate. Brock often hit singles and stuck out when he should have been walked. He ranks 55th all-time in doubles and is #13 on the list of players who have struck out the most over the course of their careers. Nevertheless, Brock's speed once on base is undeniable and he was inducted into the MLB Hall of Fame in 1985.

The song refers to the Biblical story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego and the fiery furnace in the Book of Daniel. However, the lyrics "Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego" in the track are used and sampled from Sly Stone's "Loose Booty", where they are repeated and spoken rhythmically throughout the track in an almost rap-like form. The drum beat is a loop from the song “Hot & Nasty” by Black Oak Arkansas and played by drummer Tommy Aldridge.

Since I Left You is their debut studio album released in November 2000 in Australia. After the album's positive reception in Australia, the duo considered an international release – its date was held back until 2001 in the United Kingdom and North America and appeared in slightly altered forms. The delay and changes occurred so that the group could obtain permission to use the samples or use replacements.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, guitarist Dave Sitek explained the step by step process of "Happy Idiot". Stiek started creating the song at Sonic Ranch by arranging the musical instruments. In the liner notes to the Velvet Underground's box set Peel Slowly And See, Lou Reed wrote, "'Rock and Roll' is about me. If I hadn't heard rock and roll on the radio, I would have had no idea there was life on this planet. Which would have been devastating - to think that everything, everywhere was like it was where I come from. That would have been profoundly discouraging. Movies didn't do it for me. TV didn't do it for me. It was the radio that did it."

While there is some debate as to the exact origins of the group, most historians agree the the members of Ugly Duckling (Andy Cooper, Dizzy Dustin, and Young Einstein) first crossed paths in a small village just outside Jakarta in early 1927. Einstein, one of the world's most prominent relic hunters, had been in the area for months as part of a massive excavation effort aimed at uncovering artifacts from the 4th century Hindu kingdoms. One of just a handful of pilots considered skilled enough to handle the Boeing F2B, Dizzy was among a small group of American aviators who sought work flying precious cargo missions in Southeast Asia following the war. Andy had been in the area numerous times in the previous years while serving as a special agent for the armed forces under then president Calvin Coolidge and was thought by many in the military to have been captured.

Limited Potential was the Chicago-based independent that released and distributed some of the band's earliest material.

At the start of 1990 I wrote a song called Right Here, Right Now, a title I disliked but intended to change before the final recording. Thirteen years later, I'm still making a living from that title, even if Fatboy Slim's identically titled song may have eaten into my action."

Numan's The Pleasure Principle album broke new ground in its use of electronic music, and it has been lauded by Nine Inch Nails, The Foo Fighters, Marilyn Manson and many others as a classic. In a 2010 interview he explained: "I felt really proud to be part of the electronic thing, in general. You know, it did feel as if it was at the very front end of something new and exciting. The albums that were being made by the electronic people felt as if they were important records, because it felt like an important time - as if this is a new door opening to what music had to offer. And I felt really proud to be just a small part of that. So when I was making Pleasure Principle I didn't think much more than that."

This song was recorded at Musicland Studios in Munich, Germany some time in early to mid 1975. Jeff Lynne wrote the song on a piano in the studio on the last days of recording, writing it very quickly. The band's recording for all of the other songs for the Face The Music album had been completed when Jeff needed another song. One morning, while the rest of the band was out, he sat at the piano and played the opening piano riff, which became the basis of the song. Later that same day, the rest of the band came in and recorded the backing track. The lyrics were written and recorded the next day at Musicland. The string and female choir parts were recorded (and possibly written) later at De Lane Lea Studios in Wembley, U.K.

This featured The Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr, who recalled to Uncut magazine February 2008 about his contribution to this track: "When I got there they put down some bass and drum tracks. '(Nothing But) Flowers' sounded almost like a reggae dub track. I wasn't trying to play in an African style - although some people pointed out that I sometimes sound like that anyway! I knew all about King Sunny Ade (performer of Nigerian juju music) and I love Fela Kuti (Nigerian multi-instrumentalist) but really I just played melodies that sounded good in a high range. The intro to 'Flowers' was me playing without knowing the tape machine was on - that's how little attention I paid to any kind of remit! I built that track from the ground up. I was impressed with what David (Byrne) did on it. He worked super quickly on it."

A House broke up in 1997. The demise of A House was marked by an emotional concert in Dublin on February 28, attended by the band members' families and packing out the Olympia Theatre. In 2003, Stipe told Entertainment Weekly, "'Losing My Religion' was a fluke hit. It was a 5-minute song with no chorus and a mandolin as the lead instrument. So for us to hold that as the bar we have to jump over every time we write a song would be ridiculous."

In an interview, Mike Scott said that back when this album was recorded he worked in a semi-improvising fashion a great deal. "I was very lucky that I had a band that was sufficiently intuitive that we could make stuff up on the spot," he said, "and it would work. I've never had a band quite as intuitive as that since then: the combination of Steve Wickham on fiddle, Anthony Thistlethwaite on mandolin and sax, and the bass player, Trevor Hutchinson, who was an incredible improviser. When I had those guys, I could make up a song on the spot, and they would be arranging it as they played it for the first time. Some of the songs on that album are actually first takes."
