In this song, Sharon Van Etten talks through a panic attack with a friend ("Take my hand and help me not to shake/ Say I'm all right, I'm all right"). Beirut's Zach Condon sings harmonies and a verse of his own, the song written with him in mind, Van Etten says, not just because she first plucked it out on a ukulele, but because they both do battle with the gnarly beast of social anxiety. In an interview earlier this month, Peter Hook said, "“We played the new song, which was 'Transmission' - and everyone in the whole place stopped literally what they were doing to listen and to turn round and watch us. It was an absolutely bizarre moment. It really made the hair on your arms stand up and shivers down your spine.” Have you had those moments when, listening to KEXP, you heard music that enthralled you? Hmmm....have you heard of this band? Each year on February 7th, music lovers all over the world observe International Clash Day, an annual celebration of seminal UK punk band the Clash, and a recognition of the enduring influence of their music and human rights message. In this song, Costello is protesting the commercialization of late 1970s FM radio. Radio stations would become more and more consolidated over the years, and their playlists tightened up considerably. Eventually, deregulation led to a few companies owning the majority of American radio stations, which led to automated stations. Don't let the fools "anesthetize the way you feel." Support independent radio by calling 206-903-5397. You can donate online at kexp.org

Beastie Boys enjoyed throwing eggs at people, and their newfound riches from their debut album "Licensed to Ill" only enabled the habit. After leaving their original label, Def Jam, and getting a $750,000 advance to sign with Capitol, they spent some time at the stylish Mondrian hotel in Los Angeles, where they threw eggs from the roof at the folks below. Hotel management politely asked them to stop.: www.youtube.com If you've been waiting for the opportunity to donate to KEXP, here's your chance. Call 206-903-5397.

IQ-Tip said, "We’re just lovely musicians and artists and that’s all we do, is speak and paint pictures and try to speak to a climate but hopefully we will call some sort of uprising internally in that young Jimmy Carter and that young Angela Davis. Hopefully we will, ‘cause that’s the type of thing we do. And that’s why 'We The People’ is more of an encompassing and not just us—it’s all of us as people." It IS all of us as people! A big step up from "conscious and breathing" and a huge improvement over "dead and buried," Simple Minds were "alive and kicking" in 1985 when they released this song. The music video was helmed by the Polish director Zbigniew Rybczynski, who also worked on videos by Yoko Ono, The Alan Parsons Project and Lou Reed. It was filmed in the northern Catskill Mountains with a crane camera getting some impressive panoramic shots of the area. The waterfall is Kaaterskill Falls.: www.youtube.com
