The song's creation was a reaction to the music scene in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the band's hometown, which James Mercer described as "macho, really heavy, and aggressive." He characterized it as a punk rock-esque move akin to giving the finger to the entire town. The song was born out of frustration regarding his personal life and future. The line "Gold teeth and a curse for this town" refers to his songwriting talent and his feelings on Albuquerque.

At Devo's New York debut show in 1977, Bowie proclaimed that "this is the band of the future, I'm going to produce them in Tokyo this winter." Eventually, Eno was chosen to produce the album at Conny Plank's studio located near Cologne, Germany. Mike Scott said that he'll "never forget writing this song." He said: "I had all my writing on pieces of paper. I was fixing the papers, and the song needed a third verse. I had had the first two verses for about six or eight weeks, so I wrote the third verse in the studio. The music got written that day in the studio as well. I had the chords, but the tone of the song came from Steve Wickham's fiddle accompaniment."
The song refers to the Wittenoom asbestos mine in Western Australia where blue asbestos was mined between 1947 and 1966. The once-thriving town is now a virtual ghost town. Shops are boarded up, the 2 schools are closed, the local cinema is derelict. In their ignorance, the original settlers used asbestos in gardens, school yards and roads. Wittenoom is without doubt Australia's greatest industrial disaster and it is estimated that 25% of the 20,000 men who mined asbestos there will die from related diseases.:www.youtube.com

When this single was released in 2002, it was initially only available for one day, because as Jez Williams said, "We liked the fact that you could only get a hold of a certain amount of this or a certain amount of that. Especially in this day and age of readily available bits of music, it's kind of nice: a physical copy that's precious to you because you managed to get to the shop that day and actually own that."

The song's lyrical concept is about being abandoned by previous generations who promised us so much. Philippakis explained to Consequence of Sound: "Our ancestors built up, progressed and built civilizations and they built amazing cities. And now at the point of precipice where we're kind of in a perilous situation in many ways socially and environmentally, they're not around to help. And we're not adults. Sometimes I'm just like, where are all the adults?"

While it was not the first single featuring rapping to be commercially successful, it was the first to top the charts. Its lyrics were especially notable for namechecking hip-hop pioneers Fab Five Freddy and Grandmaster Flash.

"Gone," he feels, "really sums up the spirit of the whole album" in both sound and intent.
"It's really about lying in silence and sort of acknowledging the fact that I was not showing up for myself," Alfons says. "There were just, like, patterns of shame, guilt and trying to forgive myself, and ('Gone') is all about that and how it led to the rest of this music." www.billboard.com

Harriette Pilbeam, will be at Barboza on Saturday, September 28th, 2019.“Obsessed,” the third single from her debut album, pushes the singer further into shoegaze-y territory, with fuzzy guitar and searing lyrics reminiscent of My Bloody Valentine and the Cocteau Twins: “Hung myself out to dry till you let me in/That’s when I knew I’d clip my wings, do anything for you.”: www.youtube.com
