The lyrics to this song (written by Memphis Minnie in 1927) are based on The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927. African-American plantation workers were forced to work on the levee at gunpoint, piling sandbags to save the neighboring towns. After the levee breached, blacks were not allowed to leave the area, and were forced to work in the relief and cleanup effort, living in camps with limited access to the supplies which were coming in. Many left at the first chance since there was no work in the Delta after the destruction of all of the plantations.

Huh! This was Lou Reed's attempt at writing a hit for the Velvet Underground, who were highly influential, but commercially doomed. "Loaded" was the band's last album, and the title was a reference to the record company mandate that the album be "Loaded with hits."
There was a great deal of acrimony during recording of the album, and Reed left before it was finished. In his absence, "Sweet Jane" was edited down, with a wistful coda removed from the song. This angered Reed, who told Rolling Stone magazine that if he knew they were going to press on with the album, "I would have stayed with them and showed them what to do." The full version of the song can be heard on the album "Live at Max's Kansas City," recorded in 1969.

The song was originally recorded during the sessions for Peal Jam's debut album "Ten," featuring the band's original drummer Dave Krusen. That version is included as a bonus track on 2009's re-issue of "Ten." Pearl Jam bassist and co-founder Jeff Ament told Billboard magazine that he feels the original that Dave Krusen played on is "vastly superior to the one that's on 'Singles'." He added: "I don't think I fully appreciated what Krusen brought to the band at that point. He really plays that song in the spirit it was written in. It's has a much trashier, Crazy Horse feel to it. It's awesome."

In this song, Australian rockers Midnight Oil bid farewell to several of Queensland's beloved locales, including the Cloudland Dance Hall, which was demolished in 1982 during Joh Bjelke-Petersen's tenure as Premier of Queensland. Located in Brisbane, the ornate venue hosted numerous concerts by Midnight Oil and several other acts, including Buddy Holly on his 1958 tour of Australia, before it was replaced by an apartment complex. The song takes aim at greedy developers who cash in on destroying pieces of Queensland's cultural history. "I felt this sick feeling in my stomach when we learnt what had happened," Peter Garrett recalled of Cloudland's overnight demolition.
