In a brief interview about the fifteenth anniversary of Turn On the Bright Lights, Interpol lead singer Daniel Kessler said the albums opening track, "Untitled" was written specifically to open their live shows. That's why it is named "Untitled," the band only thought of it as the intro song.
“Empires” was one of the first songs Elbow recorded for Giants Of All Sizes. Here’s what keyboardist Craig Potter had to say about the recording process for the song and album in general:
"We thought the studio would give us inner city vibes but we were on the edge of Hamburg which meant we spent more time in Clouds Hill rather than exploring. With time to spare, we sat around and played together in a way we haven’t for a long time and experimented and improvised with the music which led to the looser feel you hear on “Empires.”"
“Change is a hard topic to unravel,” Lyricist and frontman Ross Farrar says of the single. “In one version, people don’t like it much because it tampers with original design. But on the other hand, change is something that is a necessity and also absolutely inevitable, so it’s one of those things we have to embrace by default.”

The "whole of the moon" is the big picture, which takes a particular vision to see. Waterboys frontman Mike Scott, said: "I wrote the song when I was 26 years old, and I was discovering that there was so much more than I had ever known. There was so much more to learn than I'd even been hinted at in the culture I'd grown up in. I had a strong sense of wonderment about that, and I realized there were people who had vastly more information in their imaginations and experiences than I had. And so that's what inspired that song."
Woody Woodmansey was the drummer in Bowie's backing band, The Spiders From Mars. In 2008, he spoke to Uncut magazine about his impressions of this song: "I love 'Starman' as it's the concept of hope that the song communicates. That 'we're not alone' and 'they' contact the kids, not the adults, and kind of say 'get on with it.' 'Let the children boogie': music and rock 'n' roll! It lifted the attention away from the depressing affairs in the '70s, made the future look better. 'Starman' was the first Bowie song since 'Space Oddity' with mass appeal. After 'Starman,' everything changed."
Andrew Farriss had the idea for the riff for "Need You Tonight" while waiting for a taxi to take him to the airport. He asked the taxi driver to wait for a couple of minutes as he'd left something behind in the motel. He kept the driver waiting for an hour while he recorded the riff and eventually returned to a very frustrated driver with a tape.

"Gloria" is Latin for "Glory," and the Latin refrain of "In Te Domine" means "In You Lord." (Did you know: Bono's stage name was originally Bono Vox, which is Latin for "Good Voice"?). Bono is not fluent in Latin. He did know some Latin words - mostly because of church - and sang what came to him. Then he had to translate what he had sung, so he left the studio to find a Latin dictionary but found something better: a friend who had studied the language and could translate for him.
This was The Cure's first hit song to come off an album rather than a stand-alone single. In the UK, it was the band's ninth chart single and their fourth consecutive Top 20 hit; while in the US it was their first single to reach the Billboard Hot 100, where it peaked at number 99.

Pixies' drummer David Lovering on "Gouge Away": "It's the perfect example of a true Pixies song. It's got the quiet verse and then it goes all-out for the chorus. The way it's structured, it's two opposing layers. I remember when we recorded it, I thought it was the most compelling thing we ever did."
Phantogram on the new track: "“Mister Impossible” was a song title we had in mind for a long time before it was written. We started working on it in the studio we built over the last year in Laurel Canyon, which we call Harmony West — we haven’t had our own workspace since Harmony Lodge [the barn where the band made their first couple albums in upstate New York], and it’s been so inspiring to have the opportunity once again to create music in our own space. Then we went out to Joshua Tree this last spring to work at Rancho de la Luna, where the recording really came together — some of the most fun we’ve had making music in a long time."

"Dream Police" dates back to 1976. It was one of 22 songs the band had written for their first album, and it didn't make the cut. The song evolved as they played it live and refined it in the studio, and it was released as the title track of their fourth studio album.
When the song is performed live, the band is traditionally replaced by robots that resemble themselves.
Byrne said this was the first love song he ever wrote. "I didn't try to compromise this time and say 'love is nice'" he told The Face in 1983.

On the VH1 show True Spin, Duran Duran explained that Rio is a metaphor for America, and the song expressed their desire to succeed here.
The title was inspired by an encounter with a 10-year-old fan. "She had this beautiful red hair, this beautiful skin, these beautiful green eyes, and she was looking up at me, holding [out] for an autograph," Parton recalled to NPR in 2008. "I said, 'Well, you're the prettiest little thing I ever saw. So what is your name?' And she said, 'Jolene.' And I said, 'Jolene. Jolene. Jolene. Jolene. That is pretty. That sounds like a song. I'm going to write a song about that.'"
