I received a mixed tape every couple weeks from my boyfriend at the time (now husband). He attended VCU in Richmond, Virginia which was only 1.5 hours away from me but phone calls were expensive and considered long distance so sending each other mixed tapes and letters through the mail was how we communicated."

Silver Jews cover done by the Swedish sisters. David Berman of Silver Jews passed away on August 7th at the age of 52. Klara Söderberg of First Aid Kit stated about this cover: "I think a lot of people were as shocked as I was upon hearing the news of David Berman’s passing. It didn’t seem real. It left me completely devastated. So I wrote the song “Strange Beauty” to try to make sense of my feelings. “Random Rules” is a long time Berman favorite of ours and a song we always thought we would record if we ever made a cover album. It holds some of the greatest lyrics ever penned and shows the genius of David Berman. We hope the songs can be some kind of comfort."

New from Ben Harper. About this song, he stated - “The only thing more hazardous than oversimplifying relationships is over complicating them. Love and surrender are synonyms. Even if I remove love from the equation, mental health and day-to-day perspective, maintenance is a razors edge. Maybe acknowledging the unavoidable uneven day, or uneven days, helps avoid uneven months or even years.”

From Dan, a longtime KEXP listener, donor and volunteer, "About a Boy" mix. "This playlist — “About a Boy“ — is the amalgamation of a pair of playlists I was in process of creating to reflect the first half of my life (which also happens to be “pre-KEXP” discovery) and the second half of my life (which coincidentally happens to begin the same year I discovered KEXP)."

"The first song — The Verve’s “Bitter Sweet Symphony” — was the song to which I woke up every morning for 10 years beginning the day I bought the Urban Hymns CD in 1997."
...
From Dan's "About a Boy" mix. Dan says when he first started listening to KEXP in the early 2000s, "I could only stream KEXP on my computer, so I hated leaving my desk for risk of missing a great song. That, and perhaps more importantly the physical and emotional comfort I feel listening to KEXP through thick, padded headphones to music I love played and discussed by real humans with empathy."

From Dan's "About a Boy" mix. "The ego-centrism of my playlist is intentional, but clearly also one of its flaws. Music that I believe reflects my feelings and thoughts apparently skews toward mostly white male artists who are either from North America or the United Kingdom. The lack of diversity was not intentional; these are just the songs that I most consider the soundtrack of my mind. While the 250+ songs I carefully sequenced on my wife’s iPod Nano many years ago — my first Xmas gift to her — were intended to introduce her to music I thought she would like, this 50-song playlist is also for her, but as a window into my head through the songs I adore and return to regularly."

From Dan's "About a Boy" mix. "A large portion of the playlist reflects music I discovered or re-discovered as a KEXP listener. KEXP stood out to me at first because it was playing the “fringe” music to which I gravitated, and it now it both guides my musical enlightenment and is a constant with which I travel, wherever I may be in the world by virtue of the KEXP app. And, of course, the KEXP team feels like extended family — putting up with my many song requests, questions and silly text messages, all of which afford me brief diversions from the stressful, high-intensity professional environments I endure."
