‘Aberdeen’ is a new experimental song cycle from the creative force behind the intricate pop band Lost Lander. In 2008, Matt Sheehy, a forester in addition to a songwriter, took a job in Kurt Cobain’s hometown. Living in a run-down, remote cabin, he soon became entangled with an eccentric local couple. Those experiences are now a one-man, musical storytelling performance that Sheehy describes “as a rock concert, meets The Moth, meets The Twilight Zone.” Told through song and spoken word and accompanied by live-action and animated projections by Stefan Nadelman, ‘Aberdeen’ is also Lost Lander’s third studio album, which features contributions from bandmate Sarah Fennell, Drew Shoals (Train), Brent Knopf (EL VY, Menomena), Dave Depper (Death Cab for Cutie), Scott Magee (Ural Thomas & the Pain), Dana Bouy (Akron/Family), and Justin Miller. It’s available on June 14 to all who attend these live performances or publicly on August 9.

"World Shut Your Mouth" was written during Cope's 1983 retreat to the village of Drayton Bassett (close to his childhood home of Tamworth), following the breakup of his former band, The Teardrop Explodes. Two of the tracks, "Metranil Vavin" and "Pussyface," had in fact been intended for The Teardrop Explodes, and different versions of each appear on the belated 1990 release of the band's scrapped third album.

"Obvious Child" was recorded live in the streets of Pelourinho Square of Salvador, Brazil in 1988. According to Simon, microphones were hung from windows or on telephone poles to capture the performances. "Hundreds of people gathered. It was an amazing day — an amazing recording experience."
"Doot, do, doot, do, doot, do, doot, do, do..." Danielle Haim dedicated the song to Lou Reed, likely a nod to the song's similarity to Reed's "Walk On The Wild Side." In a press statement, she said she started writing the song after her partner was diagnosed with cancer. “ I was on tour and felt like I was trying to send positive energy his way almost telepathically. "If You Leave" was written after John Hughes decided to change the ending to "Pretty in Pink" after poor test audience reactions. Hughes had asked the band for a song for the new ending two days before they were due to begin a tour, and "If You Leave" was written and recorded in under 24 hours as a result.
The robotic vocal sound was created with a Vocoder, which is an electronic device originally created to encode speech. Other songs that used a vocoder around this time include "Believe" by Cher and "Blue (Da Ba Dee)" by Eiffel 65.
Here’s what Shadow has to say about “Rocket Fuel”: It’s been awhile since my last album The Mountain Will Fall, and the corresponding tour…and since the tour ended, I’ve been mostly silent. This is because I’ve been focused and working on a ton of music. I usually try to avoid hyperbole, and I’m not super-comfortable hyping up my own stuff, but things are about to get pretty exciting. My heroes De La Soul were kind enough to join me on the debut single, “Rocket Fuel,” and the collab encapsulates so much of what I love about hip-hop…energy, beats, and fun.
