The influential ESG (Emerald, Sapphire, Gold) was born in the Bronx in the late 70's and has been sampled in over 500 songs to date. In an interview with Quietus in 2015, vocalist Renee Scroggins said about their sound, "We just went out there trying to create a new sound and do our own thing. The thing that I am always appreciating is that we helped to open it up for other women to get in the business. I mean, I appreciate starting out in 1979 and still being here at 2015, because I know how hard it was, as a woman. I been through a lot of crap, but to be able to ride the bumps and still do your thing and still be respected in this industry...
that's a lot."

Singer/guitarist Dave Wakeling to Songfacts about this track: "I just started thinking about different situations where people would ostensibly look like they were doing something, but in fact they were checking their own reflection out. And you'd see it perhaps on Saturday afternoon with people window shopping, half the time they're actually just looking at their own reflection. Then this restaurant opened, and it was a big deal at the time because it had glass tables, and I was like, oh, you can watch yourself."

About the vocal sample in this one from The Avalanches: “It’s based around a sample from a 12-year-old singer called Chandra… We came across her EP, called The Transportation EP, made in 1980 and it’s this crazy No Wave post-punk random music… It must be very strange for her today to hear her 12-year-old self sampled in another dimension exploded around in space and time, coming back out through the radio again.”
