We must remember and not be indifferent.”

The Pixies released a statement this morning about the passing of Kim Shattuck, who was their touring bassist for six months in 2013: “We are devastated about Kim's passing. She was a genuine musician, writer and performer who committed her life for the cause. She brought all of her life force to her endeavors and we are fortunate for her sharing some of that life force with us. RIP.”
The Muffs guitarist and vocalist Kim Shattuck has passed away after a two-year battle with ALS. She was 56. Born in 1963, Shattuck spent most of her life as a fixture of Los Angeles after joining The Pandoras as a bassist in 1985. Conflict arose in the band due to the removal of keyboardist Melanie Vammen. Coupled with two canceled international tours, Shattuck opted to leave the band of her own volition in 1990. In 1991, she and Vammen would reunite to form The Muffs.

Donita Sparks about the origins of this song to Spin in 2012: "I was in my apartment in Echo Park listening to the cassette I’d made, trying to write some lyrics. I was heartbroken at the time. I was actually devastated. And the first thing that came to my mind was, “I just pretend that you’re dead.” And I didn’t mean it in a malicious way, not like I wanted him dead or anything, but I truly felt that the only way I could get through this was to pretend this guy was dead. I had to mourn him. And then immediately, in my mind, I’m like, I’m not writing that. It’s just not gonna happen. What about, “pretend we’re dead”? I liked that because that was a children’s game. And then it became kind of a commentary on Reagan/Bush–era apathy. I don’t think I’ve ever told that story, actually."
