Last year, Cave did two barely imaginable things: he started an ask-me-anything online forum called the Red Hand Files where he candidly discussed his own state of mind and handed out sage advice like the most sublime of agony uncles. Then Cave took the whole process on tour, embarking on an extraordinary series of solo dates in which he mixed song with questions from the audience. That this formerly forbidding bard of lust and brimstone, violence and tenderness, was trading in his artistic aloofness for a purgative communion marked one of the most remarkable evolutions in rock. “Nothing can go wrong, because everything has gone wrong,” he noted. The Conversations with Nick Cave tour come to The Moore on Friday.

Foals have released a video for "Into the Surf." The video is directed by Steve Warne, whose previous animation has featured in films by Wes Anderson and Tim Burton. “The world of the song is so distinctive it seemed right to try and reflect it fairly closely with a mix of shimmering, expansive visuals with a human intimacy,” said Warne. “The visual motifs were linked closely to the lyrics. “By mixing traditional stop-motion with live action and digital animation techniques the idea was to aim for something that felt just about tangible but almost out of reach, echoing the themes of the song in a heightened dreamlike way. A little bit of reality with a dose of mystery.” See it here" bit.ly

Tori Amos covered "We Float" while on tour in 2014. Amos’ rendition is all darkness and attitude. By replacing the piano with a jagged synth, Amos amplifies the original’s core of brooding intensity while delivering a croon that’s brimming with a certain kind of sexually-charged mystique. Vedder described this to the Canadian radio station The Edge as "as close to a love song as we've ever gotten." He added to the Toronto Globe and Mail: "There's never a dull moment on the road – every day it's something. Maybe that's why my goal is the dull moment. That's what this song is: It's saying, 'Just stop, and be together. Don't talk now, just breathe and feel each other's presence – now that the kids are in bed.'"

Recalling the origins of her hit tune during her performance at Glastonbury 2014, Dolly said: "Now, some of you may or may not know that that song was loosely based on a little bit of truth. I wrote that years ago when my husband was spending a little more time with Jolene than I thought he should be. I put a stop to that. I got rid of that redhead woman in a hurry. I want you folks to know, though, that something good can come from anything. Had it not been for that woman I would never have written 'Jolene' and I wouldn't have made all that money, so thank you, Jolene."

For Aubrie Sellers, who used the term “garage country” to describe the turbo-charged material on her 2016 debut New City Blues, the addition of Earle for her rock-fueled rendition of the song was a natural. “I love bluegrass, and I thought it would be fun to bring a song with unmistakable mountain soul like this into my world a little bit,” says Selllers in a release. “It’s the only song [on the new album] I didn’t write, but it’s something I wish I’d written. I live for straightforward, emotionally driven writing like this. When I envisioned the sound for the track, I knew there was no one else who could do it like Steve.”

Weller was only 18 when he penned this celebration of youth in the big city. He recalled writing this song to Q magazine April 2011: "It was the sound of young Woking, if not London, a song about trying to break out of suburbia. As far as we were concerned, the city was where it was all happening; the clubs, the gigs, the music, the music. I was probably 18, so it was a young man's song, a suburbanite dreaming of the delights of London and the excitement of the city. It was an exciting time to be alive. London was coming out of its post-hippy days and there was a new generation taking over. The song captured that wide-eyed innocence of coming out of a very small community and entering a wider world, seeing all the bands, meeting people, going to the clubs, and the freedom that it held."

Despite Beavis and Butt-Head's claim that Pavement "weren't trying hard enough," the truth of it is, these guys knew exactly what they were doing. The anti-guitar solos, disaffected vocals, instantly memorable lyrical non-sequiturs and unmade song structures -- these weren't so much statements as pop-culture indictments.

"Dream Police" dates back to 1976. It was one of 22 songs the band had written for their first album, and it didn't make the cut. The song evolved as they played it live and refined it in the studio, and it was released as the title track of their fourth studio album. By this time, their live album At Budokan had been released, breaking them big with the single "I Want You To Want Me." The next single was "Dream Police," and it became one of their most popular songs, reaching #26 in the US.

“Dirty Laundry,” is Danny Brown's ode to the stand-up comedy that often informs his clever lyricism. “This is my version of a stand-up comedy album. Most of my close friends now aren’t rappers – they’re comedians and actors,” Brown said in a statement. “So I wanted to create something that mixed humor with music. Something that was funny but not parody.”

Why Idaho? Schneider explained to the Idaho Statesman that it was the wacky reputation of the state, saying, "Idaho is pretty mysterious to all of us. I know it's a beautiful state, but then I know there's also a lot of crazy right-wingers and all that stuff." He added, "The song's about all different things. It's not like a parody of Idaho or anything." It wasn't until September 13, 2011 that the B-52s finally played in Idaho.

By the time this single was released, Margaret Thatcher was serving her seventh year as British Prime Minister. Her controversial right-wing policies (as well as President Ronald Reagan's across the pond) inspired a discography of outrage from various Brits including Elvis Costello with the bitter diatribe "Tramp The Dirt Down" and Morrissey with the blatant "Margaret on the Guillotine." Karl Wallinger, formerly of The Waterboys, chimed in with World Party's "Ship of Fools." He doesn't explicitly mention Thatcher, but warns that the rampant materialism of the era will backfire on the greedy, as well as the poor souls along for the ride on the Ship of Fools.

Rudi Willingham on Drunk Reactions: "This record smashes spacey synths, obscure samples, and soulful vocals into glorious future-funk burritos. The tracks ‘Why?’ And ‘Pool Party’ were named KEXP’s ‘Song of the Day’, and I debuted many of the songs at Capitol Hill Block Party this summer. Musical influences range from Daft Punk’s French House, to Tame Impala’s Psychedelic rock, to DJ Shadow’s trip-hop collages."

Sampa the Great was terrified before she stepped on stage to play her first ever show in Africa earlier this year. The show was in the Zambian capital of Lusaka – and the artist, MC and poet’s cousins were in the front row. “I’m based in Australia and all the monumental moments in my career have happened there,” says Sampa. “But I’m from Zambia. My fear was that they wouldn’t get it – and their opinion matters most.” She sums up her concerns: “A person coming out of Africa and playing globally while still being themselves and pushing for their own culture – to go home and not be understood.” Fortunately, the shows went well. “They sang back to me – it was amazing.”
