The producers of Say Anything were charged about $200,000 to use this song. The scene became a cultural touchstone, which was a little strange for Gabriel. He told Rolling Stone in 2012: "I've talked to John Cusack about that. We're sort of trapped together in a minuscule moment of contemporary culture."

In the Under The African Skies documentary, which details the making of Graceland, Simon says that his South African collaborator Forere Motloheloa told him that the groove he came up with on the piano accordion was "paying tribute to a beautiful woman who he found and is happy with." Motloheloa worked in the mines for Lesotho before learning to play traditional melodies on the unusual instrument. "The solitude of the place combined with the landscape gives him beautiful things to translate into the music," he said.

“The world of the song is so distinctive it seemed right to try and reflect it fairly closely with a mix of shimmering, expansive visuals with a human intimacy,” said video producer, Steve Warne. “By mixing traditional stop-motion with live action and digital animation techniques the idea was to aim for something that felt just about tangible but almost out of reach, echoing the themes of the song in a heightened dreamlike way. A little bit of reality with a dose of mystery.” See the video here: bit.ly

“American lawmakers value wealth over the health and safety of other people’s children,” writes Bachman of the single’s themes of the 24-hour news cycle and the graying truth. “American leadership is affiliated with several criminal organizations, both foreign and domestic. The citizenry knows they’re not getting accurate information. We’re distracted. We value entertainment over the truth. We value comfort over justice. Young people, participate! All strains of human decency, please! You’re being lied to! Vote the bastards out!”

“It’s a song about how our problems and anxieties can build up and feel like a tangled inescapable web,” Matt Berninger tells Rolling Stone. “Sometimes all it takes is a friend with some perspective and patience to help us see our way out of our own messes. It’s also just a love song between a spider and a moth.”

This track sees Liz Phair reuniting with Brad Wood – who produced her acclaimed 1993 debut ‘Exile in Guvyille’. She told Stereogum about working with Wood again: “I think the comprehensive and gorgeous reissue of my first record plus the Girly-Sound track made me nostalgic for the old days – thinking about the mindset we had when we were just starting out. I think I was curious to see what kind of music Brad and I (and Casey) would make now, on the other side of our careers.”

‘Hero’ pays homage to some of the world’s most important history-changing heroes that were taken too soon due to violence; heroes to Michael Kiwanuka and others, like Fred Hampton, Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, JFK, Sam Cooke, John Lennon, Marvin Gaye, Tupac and more. The flip side, of course, is the idea that those who bring the most evil to this world seem to live the longest, making him ponder the idea that maybe all heroes die first. ‘Hero’ is the third track to be taken from his forthcoming new album, KIWANUKA, which is out Friday. He'll be at The Showbox on January 29th.

Jimi wrote the song quietly in his apartment and didn't show it to anybody. After recording "Fire", he had 20 minutes to spare in the recording studio, so he showed it to the band. They managed to record it in the 20 minute period they had. The band later recorded several more takes of the song, but they all seemed very sterile and they decided to go with the original recording.

This was Reed's attempt at writing a hit for the Velvet Underground, who were highly influential, but commercially doomed. Loaded was the band's last album, and the title was a reference to the record company mandate that the album be "Loaded with hits." There was a great deal of acrimony during recording of the album, and Reed left before it was finished. In his absence, "Sweet Jane" was edited down, with a wistful coda removed from the song. This angered Reed, who told Rolling Stone magazine that if he knew they were going to press on with the album, "I would have stayed with them and showed them what to do." Of course we're playing the full version.

In a press release, Barnett says: “We took Loose Tooth on tour around Europe in Mid-2018 and every night I sat in my hotel room teaching myself how to play 'Keep On.' This was before their album had come out but the song already felt like an old classic to me. I sat in bed with my guitar every night n I had to slow the song down and pull it apart a little bit n in that process it gained a certain weight where I heard the words differently. The chorus became a mantra and shook me up a bit. Loose Tooth have this incredible talent for churning out the sweetest pop songs with these biting lyrics, all whilst maintaining this charming n disarming onstage banter n crowd surfing to the bar for a beer mid-song. The lyrics to this song are particularly powerful n nostalgic to me. The band performing with me is Jen Sholakis on Drums, Dave Mudie on Bass n Me on Guitar. I didn’t let them rehearse cos I knew they’re too good and they’d work better n looser under the pressure. We recorded it in a few hours with everyone on vocals at the end plus a little added angel, Anika AKA Hachiku.” Milk on Milk is out November 15th.

According to drummer Martin Chambers, the song was largely formed in the studio based on a rough sketch presented by Hynde. Chambers explained, "We never really got into the studio without any rehearsal and record[ed] a song, [but] we have done that once and that was 'Message of Love'. ... [Hynde] likes to come to [the band] when she has [a song] finished in her mind ... but this time she hadn't really finished it and so we just ... rehearsed it already set up in the studio and it was on tape in two hours, basically."

Krissy Vandewoude, who as lead vocalist, writes all the lyrics and melodies for Whimsical, shares what her inspiration was for this happy, uplifting song. “We all have someone in our lives who is our anchor, our light in the dark or calm in the storm. The person who feels like your safe place when everything is falling apart. When I have had sad, scary or uncertain times, it has been such a comfort to have someone I could trust, who was always there unconditionally for me. I envisioned their ‘angel wings’ being wrapped around me in a protective hug, and it was that visual which inspired the lyrics.”

During live performances the band would repeat a single chord from the song for as long as they felt bearable, the song descending into cacophony. This is sometimes referred to as the "holocaust section", and usually lasted about 15 minutes, although there are reports of shows where it went on for well over half an hour. For the 2008–09 reunion shows, "You Made Me Realise" brought each show to an ear-splitting conclusion, reaching up to 130 dB.
