Like many of the tracks on Beach House's fourth album, "Bloom," this song is about the elusiveness of certain feelings. Guitarist Alex Scally commented: "I think elusiveness is a big feeling in everyone's life. Ideally we want a song to be an honest reflection of reality. You know, you look at it, you gaze into it, and what's given back to you carries with it a truth; it's something real, something very real. That's what we want, more than anything. What exactly you see, in your own mind, is your own experience of that truth."

Thanks, Nick, for this excellent request. The vocalist and lyricist for this song was Elizabeth Fraser, whose lyrics were inspired by the death of her one-time close friend, singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley. The news that Buckley had drowned whilst swimming came while Fraser was recording this song.

Shouldn't this song be on your running playlist? They had been members of a locally popular band called Beau Leisure when they decided to strike out on their own. This song was from their debut LP in 1988 and was an instant hit, reaching #11 on the Billboard Top 100. However, it turned out to be their only major hit. Thanks to its use in "Pretty in Pink", this was the biggest hit for OMD in America. They did chart in the US with "Enola Gay," "So In Love," "(Forever) Live and Die" and "Dreaming," but are far more popular in their native England. Andy McCluskey said: "To many Americans, we are a one hit wonder, even though we had several other hits. Nothing as big as 'If You Leave.' It's a blessing to have such a big hit, but a shame that it overshadows so many other good songs for the US audience. We have many European fans who hate the song..."
