Hey Wednesday, welcome to The Morning Show... and David Bowie's birthday!!!
...
When performing the song live, Bowie would sometimes call out, “Oh, Rocket Man!”, possibly making a reference to his once good friend John. ‘Rocket Man’, was also produced by Gus Dudgeon (who produced ‘Space Oddity’ in ’69) in 1972. - bit.ly

This song can be seen as a sequel to Bowie's 1969 hit, "Space Oddity." RCA Records, released a promotional single in 1980 titled "The Continuing Story of Major Tom." On it, "Space Oddity" was mixed smoothly into "Ashes to Ashes," creating a nine-minute epic. The end of the first song meshed uncannily with the start of the second. It was as if that had been Bowie's intention all along. - n.pr

This is a sequel to Bowie's 1969 song "Space Oddity," and continues the story of Major Tom. In this song, having determined that Major Tom is, in fact, sober, Earth decides to bring Tom home. However, just as he is about to turn on the thrusters and jet down to Earth, he cuts off communication with the line "give my wife my love" and turns off the power to the ship. It is assumed that, sadly, Tom died in the process of re-entry, but in fact he has faked his death so he can return to the depths of space, which he now considers his home.

Shawn Smith said Prince was his biggest inspiration. “Prince is kind of the rock in the center of it all. That’s where I really learned.” Smith said that he focused on Prince when he was learning to write songs, adding, “Everything I learned as a songwriter in terms of structure I kind of got from Prince, because he writes in a very specific way, you know, verse/chorus/verse/chorus, he has these things.” - bit.ly

Prince covers Radiohead!!! Thom Yorke heard about Prince’s performance from a text message and thought it was “hilarious.” Yorke laughed when his bandmate, guitarist Ed O’Brien, said the blocking had prevented him from seeing Prince’s version of their song. Yorke said: “Well, tell him to unblock it. It’s our … song.” - bit.ly

Peter Gabriel released a covers album called Scratch My Back, and the artists he covered agreed to return the favor by recording one of Gabriel's songs - except David Bowie. But Gabriel still wanted to cover Bowie's hit Heroes so he got around it by asking Brian Eno, who co-wrote the song, to take part.

Co-written by Brian Eno, this track finds David Bowie in the grips of paranoia thanks to a guy named Jonny, whose propensity for violence and insatiable lust for material possessions frightens the singer. Jonny is a satirical representation of a stereotypical American obsessed with capitalist culture.

The song comes from behind-the-scenes of a huge benefit concert for Queen singer Freddie Mercury who had died at the result of AIDS not long before. The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert for AIDS Awareness was held on Easter Monday, 20 April 1992 at Wembley Stadium in London, England for an audience of around 72,000. The concert was produced for television by Ray Burdis, directed by David Mallet and broadcast live on television and radio to 76 countries around the world, with an audience of up to one billion… a billion. The concert was conducted in tribute to Queen’s lead vocalist, Freddie Mercury, who had died of AIDS on 24 November 1991. All profits found their way to specific AIDS charities.

On the surface, this song is about dancing with a lover, but according to Nile Rodgers, there's a deeper meaning. He told Mojo: "When David wrote those lyrics, he was talking about the dance that people do in life; the conceptual dance of not being honest. He sings, 'put on your red shoes and dance the blues.' Like you're pretending to be happy but you're sad." - bit.ly
