The band's Adam Granduciel says he began working on the cut years before the album came out, as a “Creedence Clearwater-meets-White-Album-Paul-McCartney song." He says "when we went to North Carolina [to record] we just started piling things on top of it. There’s a whole other song that I put in behind it that you can barely hear, but it’s in there.” Alright..!

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross recorded this version of David Bowie’s “Life on Mars?” for the HBO series 'Watchmen'. The instrumental appears in the recently aired seventh episode, “An Almost Religious Awe.” Reznor has referred to Bowie as a “mentor” and “fatherly figure” in a written memorial, has contributed to the singer’s 1997 single “I’m Afraid of Americans” and even appeared in the music video for the track.

M83's Anthony Gonzalez says "When I was a kid, I had this cassette with someone telling these weird stories on it, and I was in love with it. My brother and I wrote the story for that song based on those cassettes. With that song, I wanted to start with something so ridiculous and basic and childish that then grows to something very touching and human. It's dangerous, but if you listen to it in the context of the album, it makes sense."

Jon Hopkins and Kelly Lee Owens teamed up for their first collaborative single. Hopkins says
“I sent (Owens) the parts, but what she sent back just felt like something totally new, and had the potential to be so much more than a remix. She’d recorded these beautiful, uplifting vocal lines and had come up with joyous new riffs that recalled for me the best bits of the ’90s trance/euphoria that I had grown up loving. I got a beautiful sense of nostalgia and a true heart-lifting joy the first time I heard it, and it was so painless to take it from there to a finished piece—related and born out of ‘Luminous Beings’ but very much its own thing.”
Border Country is the second collaboration with friend of Underworld and DRIFT community member Ø [Phase]. The band says "We wrote 'Divine Intervention' in the summer of 2017 in Josh’s old bedroom, with me trying to dictate this dream I had had for a song and Josh frantically trying to capture that onto a demo. We played it for a little while as a two-piece, but put it aside as we grew quite sick of it very quickly. When we started playing with Louis in the winter of that same year, he gave it a new lease on life with the addition of live drums, and I guess ever since we’ve been adding bits here, taking bits away there, and seeing how it feels when we play it live. Peter Hook: The song "came from the dirty streets of Salford. It’s a thing that I still wonder about: where does any music come from? The part of your brain when you write music that’s unconscious? It was written on the bass and drums and then Bernard put the keyboard on it." He says "I was just playing around with a riff and Ian spotted the melody... He jumped on it and goes: ‘That’s good, that’s good… Now Steve, put some drums on.’ ... “It was the way we always wrote. Ian didn’t write the music but he could spot it. We’d jam, he’d sit there and pick out the bits he thought were good."
Fun fact: The Spanish indie pop act Linda Guilala is named after the Godzilla-like monster at the center of the Japanese film 'The X from Outer Space'). They were founded by Iván González and Eva M. The song is about the relationship between Liars frontman Angus Andrew and Yeah Yeah Yeahs lead singer Karen O. The video shows the band playing in an audition in a high school gymnasium, with different light filters changing the color of the room. Karen O can be seen crying in the video, and she explains that "They were real tears. My boyfriend at the time (Angus Andrew) was supposed to come to the shoot – he was three hours late and I was just about to leave for tour. I didn't think he was even going to come and this was the song that was written for him. He eventually showed up and I got myself in a real emotional state."
