OTD in 1990, PEARL JAM played their first ever concert when they appeared at the Off Ramp in Seattle. At the time, Eddie Vedder, Stone Gossard, Jeff Ament, Mike McCready and former drummer Dave Krusen played the Off Ramp show under the name "Mookie Blaylock," a former basketball player who then played for the New Jersey Nets. STORY TIME: Jeff Ament explains the story behind their original name: "When we were recording our first record, we had a per diem of about $10. So when we got lunch at the store across the street, we'd always buy a pack of basketball cards. When we turned in our tape, we didn't have a name for the band yet so we put a Mookie Blaylock card in the case. We were about to go on a tour and still didn't have a name and needed one quickly. We were told it didn't need to be the name that we were going to use forever, just something for the tour. Someone saw the Mookie Blaylock card and said, 'How about Mookie Blaylock?' We decided to go with it and did a 10-show tour with Alice in Chains as Mookie Blaylock. Mookie was cool about it, too--he didn't sue us. I actually got to meet him later on and shoot around a little bit. We also made a Pearl Jam T-shirt with a picture of him on it. I guess we owe Mookie a lot."

This is the opening track to "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars." An announcement airs that the world will end in five years' time because of a lack of natural resources. David Bowie chose five years as the length of time following a dream he had in 1971 in which his late father came to him and told him that he had only five years left to live and that he must never fly again.

Chime School's Andy Pastalaniec does it all for the love. As the drummer for dreamy pop bands like Flowertown, Seablite, and very occasionally The Reds, Pinks & Purples, the San Franciscan musician brings a beaming energy to everything he lays his hands on. As Chime School's sole songwriter, performer, and producer, Pastalaniec is well aware of the manic sound of his debut. "I was trying to jampack decades of pop fandom into one album, stuffing in as many little things as I could," he laughs. "That was the first record where I wrote, played, and recorded everything myself, so there was a huge learning curve to it." Chime School's sophomore effort, The Boy Who Ran The Paisley Hotel, is an assured continuation, meticulously weaving lyrical (and musical) references into a symphony to pop songcraft itself. Like the Feelies' change of pace from Crazy Rhythms to The Good Earth, Pastalaniec recentered himself by slowing down. "I took a step back and chose a more condensed palette," he explains. "That brought me a bit closer to the sonic vision I had from the beginning." tinyurl.com

Chime School is the project of San Francisco musician Andy Pastalaniec. Endlessly charmed by 80s indie and its 60s forbearers (and any record with a 12-string guitar), Andy cut his teeth as a drummer with SLR labelmate Odd Hope in their early group Pink Films; later with shoegazers Cruel Summer, and currently with indiepop outfit Seablite. But it wasn't until he was gifted a cassette 4-track portastudio "almost as a dare," that he came out from behind the kit to write and record his own material.'

Sam Nicholson: “I wanted to write a simple song, just four quick chords and a slow realisation. I think I somehow stole the lyrical idea from Kylie Minogue’s “Can’t Get You Out Of My Head” – that a song might be trapped inside just one thought. And in that one thought there might be everything. That’s how good that Kylie song is anyway.” -- Love this song? It's yours, for free. John selected it as a KEXP song of the Day: www.kexp.org

What a great beginning to Blondie's fourth album! -- Inspired by ABBA's "Dancing Queen" and written by Chris Stein and Debbie Harry -- according to band keyboardist Jimmy Destri, the song was recorded live in the studio! Drummer Clem Burke said: "The reason why 'Dreaming' came out the way it did is because [producer Mike Chapman] really gave me free rein and it was really a surprise. That take of 'Dreaming' was just me kind of blowing through the song. It's not like I expected that to be the take. I was consciously overplaying just for the sake of it because it was a run-through."
