Another gem from the 1981 time machine! According to its creator, Roger Linn, this was the first hit song to use the LM-1 drum machine. Introduced in 1980, the LM-1 was the first programable unit that sampled real drums rather than creating them synthetically. It became the basis for many hits of the era, with acts like Culture Club, Peter Gabriel and Gary Numan using it to make backing tracks. Its most prolific proponent was Prince, who used it on songs like "Little Red Corvette" and "When Doves Cry."

John: We just celebrated my daughter Cora’s first birthday. One of the hardest parts of this mostly amazing year was starting daycare. Quickly, though, thanks to the Morning Show, the *drive* to daycare became one of my favorite parts of each day! It’s been such a joy to get that father-daughter time, hopefully molding her little mind to have excellent musical taste, and feeling the loving vibes and sense of community you cultivate so well. Thanks for being a big part of a cherished ritual of our growing family’s life! - Sam in South Seattle Song request: “Corrina, Corrina” by Bob Dylan

My son turns 18 today! He's overcome so much to make it to his senior year with learning challenges, the pandemic and his Dad and I divorcing. Yet he's always asking me how he can help with his siblings, especially his sister with special needs. He's an avid music lover who isn't afraid to love on the classics like Johnny Cash ❤️ He's taken up running the last few years and we actually ran the KEXP 10k at Lake Union over the summer. He makes me so proud. If you could play some Johnny Cash for my boy Tanner Erin in Bellevue

Hi John, We recently lost someone near and dear to us. She was our beloved speech learning pathologist at a school in West Seattle. She was 33 years old and died suddenly and tragically this past Sunday. One of the last things she did with my classroom was support my students on an educational tour of KEXP a couple weeks ago. She said it was one of her favorite school outings she’d ever done. Julia loved music and her community here and one of her favorite bands was the Flaming Lips. Can you play Do You Realize and dedicate it to her sweet 2 & 1/2 year old boy Franklin? One day he will listen to the Mom show and feel even more connected to the community that his mom was a part of through KEXP, and realize that he is not alone. Thank you, Justin & the staff at Bridges Roxhill

You really must watch the music video to this song "Carolyn's Finger's" off of their fifth studio album Blue Bell Knoll: www.youtube.com 'Carolyn’s Fingers' may be peak Cocteau Twins, with Liz Fraser‘s voice hitting operatic registers amid a sea of layered guitars. The track was included on the band’s 1988 LP, Blue Bell Knoll, which was the band’s first LP to receive wide distribution in America. As a result, for any Americans, it was their first exposure to Cocteau Twins in all of their otherworldly, shimmering glory. In many ways, the song is the perfect encapsulation of the band’s “sonic cathedral” sound, with every note mirrored and hitting strangely cascading ripples.": www.djdmac.com
