Lead singer Thom Yorke wrote "Everything in Its Right Place" about how he felt after a show on their 1997 OK Computer tour. The show was in Birmingham, England, and when Yorke got off stage he went to the dressing room and felt completely burned out. The band was becoming famous, but Yorke was feeling helpless and victimized...The line, "Yesterday I woke up sucking a lemon," refers to the face you make because of a lemon's taste. During the OK Computer tour, Yorke walked around with a sour face a lot. www.songfacts.com

The band wrote this song with their producer, Steven Hague. It was the first time they collaborated with Hague, who joined them again to produce New Order's 1993 album "Republic." Bernard Sumner recalled: " It was a time when I set out to write a hit single. I think we got a rather large tax bill, and we sat down with Stephen Hague to write a Top 40 hit." "I had an idea for the bassline, Gillian (Gilbert, keyboards) had some string ideas, Stephen got some drums down. When we got the track going, I was sent off to the flat we had in London with a bottle of Pernod and told not to show my face again until I'd written the lyrics."

Interpol requested by Ian in Fremont. The word "obstacle" doesn't appear in this song or another track on the album, "Obstacle 2." Interpol don't think the titles of songs are important, so they put little thought into them. Lead singer and guitarist, Paul Banks, revealed to Pitchfork in 2003 why the songs are named that way. "I've just never really been all that interested in titles, so either I'm very inspired, or it's just, whatever, the working title," he said. "'Obstacle' 1 and 2 actually came from Daniel, he was working on those. I came up with those names, and they were just our working titles, and everyone was like, 'Those are great names.' We wrote 'Obstacle 2' first and 'Obstacle 1' second, and I do think it was relating to the fact that, for some reason we'd had a drought in our writing. We kind of had a down phase. We just hadn't written anything good in a couple of months, and all of a sudden we were pumping out songs. So it was sort of related to that." www.songfacts.com

This 1995 song sampled Silver Apples' 1968 "Program." -- The Folk Implosion was an American indie rock/lo-fi band founded in the early 1990s by Lou Barlow (after he had been sacked as bassist for Dinosaur Jr.) and John Davis. It was initially a side-project started by Barlow to explore different territory than that being canvassed with his primary band at the time, Sebadoh.
