Good morning and welcome to the Morning Show! **Upcoming Show** Oct 24 - Queens, NY - Forest Hills Stadium ---- This song features the vocals of Cocteau Twins' Elizabeth Fraser, who wrote this song's lyrics inspired by the death of her one-time close friend, singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley. The news that Buckley had drowned whilst swimming came while Fraser was recording this song. "That was so weird," she recalled to The Guardian in 2009. "I'd got letters out and I was thinking about him. That song's kind of about him - that's how it feels to me anyway." www.songfacts.com

What an opening track! The Guardian ranked New Order’s 30 greatest tracks. "Age of Consent" comes in at #14. The opening track of 'Power, Corruption & Lies' sounds like a statement of intent: New Order truly becoming New Order after the hesitancy and mourning of their debut album. "Age of Consent" is a shimmering, if strange, pop song, driven by one of Hook’s greatest bass lines – hypnotic, relentless, insanely catchy. www.theguardian.com

Brand new! About the track, Alex Kapranos said, “It’s about having an audacious response when you feel the fabric of existence come undone around you. Being bold, contrary. Peering over the edge into the eternity of non-existence and saying Aye! Fuck it! Not today thank you!" www.stereogum.com

Tom Petty and Mike Campbell co-wrote this classic album opener. Campbell said of the song, "That was a hard record to make. It was a 4-track that I made at my house. He (Tom Petty) wrote over the music as it was, no changes, but it took us forever to actually cut the track. We just had a hard time getting the feel right. We must have recorded that 100 times. I remember being so frustrated with it one day that - I think this is the only time I ever did this - I just left the studio and went out of town for two days. I just couldn't take the pressure anymore, but then I came back and when we regrouped we were actually able to get it down on tape."

Some album openers just this different. What a song. Watch Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash perform this song live on The Johnny Cash Show in 1969: www.facebook.com --- After Cash's death, Dylan said, “Truly he is what the land and country is all about. The heart and soul of it personified and what it means to be here; and he said it all in plain English. I think we can have recollections of him, but we can’t define him any more than we can define a fountain of truth, light and beauty.”

Nope no one has died, just another opening track from this amazing gorup. The video for this one was shot in one very long day on a $50,000 budget, large for the time, and the band was coming off a debut album that had reached no. 1. "We still saw videos as an annoying waste of time," recalls Jane Wiedlin. "After seven or eight hours we sent out someone to sneak in booze." Kathy Valentine says they drank "lots of champagne. Lots." Wiedlin says the effects are evident during the closeups of the women at the end: "... if you look at our eyes, we're all so drunk. We didn't even try to make it look like we were really waterskiing.": www.youtube.com

As relevant today as it was in 79, definitely a top tier album opener. On "London Calling," The Clash put their own climate anxieties to paper, fearing future meltdowns and London drowning into the river. -- According to guitarist Mick Jones, it was a headline in the London Evening Standard that triggered the lyric. The paper warned that "the North Sea might rise and push up the Thames, flooding the city," he wrote. "We flipped. To us, the headline was just another example of how everything was coming undone." "Spirits in the Material World" is the opening track for The Police's 1981 album "Ghost in the Machine." This song is based on the writings of Hungarian author and philosopher Arthur Koestler. Sting enjoyed Koestler's work, and the album Ghost In The Machine is named after one of his books. Koestler believed that outside influences could destroy our spirit and restrict our thinking. The "spirits" and "ghosts" Koestler wrote about were the innate higher functions that often get lost in the "machine" created by governments and corporations.
