Another great 2002 release. In a 2009 interview, band member Jez Williams said that the songs came quickly and effortlessly: "I had this little house in Northenden where my makeshift studio was. It took a couple of nights to get the backing track with the top line melody to "There Goes the Fear". Literally the next night I had "Words" coming out of the speakers."

Released on this day in 1991, Leisure is the debut studio album by English rock band Blur. In a 2007 interview, lead singer Damon Albarn expressed distaste for the album, describing it as "awful" and being one of the two "bad records" he has made in his career (the other being Blur album The Great Escape). Albarn further expanded on the album's recording in 2014, explaining that "it wasn't a particularly happy experience" and suggested the band were too keen to please the record label by capitalising on a sound that was popular at the time. The band rarely played tracks from the album live in later tours, with only the singles "There's No Other Way" and "She's So High" being frequently included in setlists

"Train in Vain" with Mick Jones on lead vocals -- a hidden track at the end of "London Calling" -- it was added at the last minute, when the sleeve was already being printed! -- tinyurl.com "It was a Saturday afternoon when Mick Jones invited me to hear the finished album. Walking into Wessex, I saw him in the vocal booth, laying down vocals for a new song. By Monday night, Train In Vain was finished. Originally mooted as an NME giveaway flexi, it became the final track on London Calling – too late, however, to include on art-work that had already gone to the printers."

Bowie was on the vanguard of the music video movement; for "DJ," director David Mallet shot a clip of Bowie coming unhinged in front of some turntables in a radio studio, along with footage of him walking the streets of London while he is mobbed by admirers. The song was dated when MTV went on the air in 1981, but Bowie was a big name and the video was of better quality than most of what they had to choose from, so it went in rotation. For many young Americans, it was their first exposure to Bowie.: www.youtube.com

"Good morning, I already used all my sick days up last week and have to go in today. Still feel quite shite. Could you please play XTC- This World Over from the Big Express to help get me through? The album was the seventh studio release from the English rock band and was inspired by the band's hometown of Swindon and its railway system, the Swindon Works.

Guitarist Andy Summers said this was the best track he ever played on. This was the first single from the second Police album, Reggatta De Blanc (which means "White Reggae" in Police-speak). "Message In A Bottle" was when they exploded in Britain; the song went to #1 on September 29, 1979 and stayed for three weeks. The song was influenced by the church music that Sting used to sing as a child. He explained in Isle of Noises by Daniel Rachel: "I used to sing Gregorian chants and plainsong as an altar boy. A lot of my melodies might reflect that love and my early exposure to that stark, melodic narrative. 'Message In A Bottle' reflects that, too."

The Head on the Door was released on this day in 1985! “The Blood” was inspired by a Portuguese wine named “Tears Of Christ” (Robert Smith changed it to “blood of Christ” using “poetic license”). He said in 1985: It’s a very cheap Portuguese wine, it’s a very heavy drink that all the workers drink… it’s about 12p a bottle. I was given a bottle of it and I drank it, and I noticed the label, which is the Virgin Mary with Baby Jesus under one arm and a bottle in the other hand. It was completely brilliant. […] I was convinced I was Portuguese, I just sank into this reverie of being a Portuguese flamenco guitarist.

OHR is the Seattle-based project of Craig Klein (formerly of The Race). Speaking on the track, Klein says: “Runaway is about connection and submitting ourselves to the wild and uncertain path of navigating life with another human. Musically I was really inspired by the driving quality. and directness of early House records and the out front vocal samples that often tied everything together. I play a lot with side chain processing which carves out space for the kick, but sometimes leads to unexpected results especially on how all of the sequences in this track duck around each other. As I’ve gotten older I’ve been a lot less concerned with being cool or obfuscating my intentions and I’m in a place now where I’m comfortable enough in my skin to write something as direct as Runaway.” ohrmusic.bandcamp.com
