I think we were at our musical peak and Rob and Brian were writing amazing tunes. Add in Bob Ezrin as an executive producer and hey, presto! He produced Lou Reed's Berlin album (a top 5 album of mine), and I think he added some of that magic dust to A and E."

On this day in 1997 Harvey Danger released their first album "Where Have All the Merrymakers Gone?" According to drummer Evan Sult, the song was written as a response to the Seattle music scene of the 1990s and its effect on mainstream culture. The title of the song was inspired by the 1930 Marx Brothers film Animal Crackers, which features a line of dialogue about the pole sitting fad of the 1920s. The band was inspired to spell "sitter" as "sitta" by the Pavement song "Fame Throwa" and the N.W.A album Straight Outta Compton. -- Watch a young Sean Nelson and compatriots performing this song on Letterman in 1998: www.youtube.com

Tune in tomorrow at 9:30am to hear them play on the Morning Show! Sam Nicholson: “I wanted to write a simple song, just four quick chords and a slow realisation. I think I somehow stole the lyrical idea from Kylie Minogue’s “Can’t Get You Out Of My Head” – that a song might be trapped inside just one thought. And in that one thought there might be everything. That’s how good that Kylie song is anyway.” -- Love this song? It's yours, for free. John selected it as a KEXP song of the Day: www.kexp.org

In a VH1 interview, Ben Gibbard describes how Raymond Carver’s short stories influenced the song’s lyrics: One of my favorite, favorite writers in the whole world is a man named Raymond Carver and he had this way of writing stories about people living small lives going through some very, uh… their very own trials and tribulations in ways that I’ve always really admired. I wanted to kind of create a story that involved two characters that were trapped by geography in Southern Florida and that they were kind of keeping themselves captive and the city that surrounded them was seemingly closing in on them and this was the outcome of that experiment. -- Check out the video here: www.youtube.com

Found on U2's classic 1987 album 'The Joshua Tree,' and written in response to the National Union of Mineworkers' 1984 strike in Great Britain. "I was interested in the miners' strike politically, but I wanted to write about it on a more personal level," Bono told NME in 1987. "A cold statistic about a pit closure and redundancies that follow is drastic enough on one level, but it never tells the full human story."
