Martin Phillipps, founding guitarist of New Zealand jangle-pop icons the Chills, has died. He was 61.
The guitarist formed the Chills in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1980. The group soon signed to Flying Nun, and their debut album Brave Words arrived in 1987, and its follow-up Submarine Bells reached #1 on the New Zealand album charts.
The Chills went on to release a total of seven studio albums, their most recent being 2021’s Scatterbrain.

Adam and Eve is the fourth studio album by English alternative rock band Catherine Wheel. It was released on 29 July 1997 by Mercury Records. This was the band's last album to feature original bassist Dave Hawes. He said of the album "Adam And Eve is my personal favourite album. I think we were at our musical peak and Rob and Brian were writing amazing tunes. Add in Bob Ezrin as an executive producer and hey, presto! He produced Lou Reed's Berlin album (a top 5 album of mine), and I think he added some of that magic dust to A and E."
Straitjacket Fits were a four-piece alternative indie rock band that formed in Dunedin, New Zealand, in 1986 and broke up in 1994.

DJ Krush (born Hideaki Ishi, or 石 英明 Ishi Hideaki), is a record producer and DJ known for his atmospheric instrumental production that incorporates sounds from nature and extensive jazz and soul samples.
Released on this day in 1996! This record was initially credited to the band's original name, Hoover. It is also Hooverphonic's only album with lead singer Liesje Sadonius.
The Belgian band Hooverphonic formed in 1995 by original members Alex Callier, Frank Duchêne, and Raymond Geerts. The three first met up and formed a band called The Love Letter Boxes in 1994.
They then called themselves Hoover, but later changed their name to Hooverphonic after discovering other groups were already using the Hoover name and to avoid any legal issues with the vacuum cleaner company.
Live from Abbey Road is a 12-part, one-hour performance series/documentary that began filming its first season during 2006 at Abbey Road Studios in London. The series features a total of 128 musical artists to date (about 32 per Season) -- usually two or three per show, performing up to five songs per session.

He came to prominence in 2004 when he released The Grey Album, which combined vocal performances from Jay-Z's The Black Album with instrumentals from The Beatles' The Beatles (aka the White Album). He formed Gnarls Barkley with CeeLo Green, Broken Bells with James Mercer of The Shins and has worked with rapper MF Doom as Danger Doom and released the album The Mouse and the Mask.

The guitarist formed the Chills in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1980. The Chills went on to release a total of seven studio albums, their most recent being 2021’s Scatterbrain.
The band was at the forefront of a psychedelic jangly type of music known as “the Dunedin sound” alongside bands like The Bats, The Clean, Verlaines, Straightjacket Fits and more. The Dunedin sound influenced many bands, including American indie rock groups R.E.M., Yo La Tengo, Mudhoney, and Pavement.

Inspiral Carpets are an English rock band, part of the late-1980s/early-1990s Madchester movement. Formed in Oldham in 1983, the band's most successful lineup featured frontman Tom Hingley, drummer Craig Gill, guitarist Graham Lambert, bassist Martyn Walsh and keyboardist Clint Boon.
On this day in 1997 Harvey Danger released their first album "Where Have All the Merrymakers Gone?"
According to drummer Evan Sult, the song was written as a response to the Seattle music scene of the 1990s and its effect on mainstream culture. The title of the song was inspired by the 1930 Marx Brothers film Animal Crackers, which features a line of dialogue about the pole sitting fad of the 1920s. The band was inspired to spell "sitter" as "sitta" by the Pavement song "Fame Throwa" and the N.W.A album Straight Outta Compton.

In a VH1 interview, Ben Gibbard describes how Raymond Carver’s short stories influenced the song’s lyrics:
One of my favorite, favorite writers in the whole world is a man named Raymond Carver and he had this way of writing stories about people living small lives going through some very, uh… their very own trials and tribulations in ways that I’ve always really admired. I wanted to kind of create a story that involved two characters that were trapped by geography in Southern Florida and that they were kind of keeping themselves captive and the city that surrounded them was seemingly closing in on them and this was the outcome of that experiment.

According to a statement posted to The Chills' social media page today, Phillipps died unexpectedly. The Otago Daily Times reported that Phillipps had recently been admitted to Dunedin Hospital with liver problems.

This is the latest song from Foals' Yannis Philippakis' project with renowned drummer Tony Allen. This collaboration began in 2016. but the recordings were never completed before Tony passed away in April 2020 at the age of 79.

Yannis felt a deep duty to complete the project, not only as a bittersweet way to honour and celebrate his friend, but also because Tony had been so eager to share these songs with the world. The result is the upcoming five-track EP, ‘Lagos Paris London,' which will be released on August 30th.

"Tom Sawyer" by Canadian rock band Rush was originally released on their 1981 album (and their eighth studio album) Moving Pictures as its opener. The band's lead singer, bassist, and keyboardist, Geddy Lee, has referred to the track as the band's "defining piece ... from the early '80s".
